Dirty water bass ?
« on: December 11, 2010, 11:43:36 PM »
Just wondering if people steer clear of fishing for bass in creeks full stop when its muddy brown ? Found out for myself that surface fishing when the water is brown doesnt always leave you with a frown especially when using surface lures with a fizzer like tiny torpedo's or strong wobble action like jitterbugs, am i the only one to have realised this or is it a pretty well known fact ?

I know when the water is a tad murky spinner bait blade colour can help a bit but what about in realy thick nearly soupy water ? Trying to find ways to not let this rain get the best of us  :-\

I've caught bass in soup but its normally not as productive until it clears a little. Dirty water normally indicates an above average flow, this can be a trigger for migrations or feeding patterns, however the increased flow normally brings increased food with it.

Cheers,

fitz..

Well i went out to what is now my favorite bass creek ( creek x ) for a bit of a fish today, Found the water was murky brown slightly clearing with fresh running into a deep pool.

Through some surface lures around with no result but as soon as i switched to a gold spinner bait got nailed by my PB wild bass ( no dams above this creek ) and also scored another smaller 30's model.

This spot is just showing the goods at the moment !

I normally go the fluoro or dark to black colours when the water is "coffee & milk".  Didn't have much luck recently off the surface although the dark purple buzzbait made enough commotion to bring one bass for a look.  I must admit I didn't try off the surface for that long so maybe I could have got more if I set my mind to it.  It definitely is hard not to fish dirty water atm that''s for sure.

Cheers Geoff

Hey Steve,

Try using some live Shrimp or worms on an unweighted hook or just a slightly weighted hook using a little pea sinker and see how much or how little fish you catch in your little stretch on Creek X when the water is chocolate brown.

I have a lot more success when the creeks and rivers are flowing much clearer.

Cheers Dave

yes definatly any creek in my opinion are better fished when its running clear im just trying not to let this dirty water and rain stop me in the way of flicking some lures around, Shrimp and worms would probly work a treat here but i just preffer the sport of lures anything to make it a challenge.

That bigger bass was caught in only a meter wide stretch of flowing stream no doubt sitting in ambush waiting for food to get washed through.

Hows fishing for yourself at the moment Bracey ?

Haven't had time to wet a line in two weeks Steve.

Saturday arvo would have been awesome to chase some Toga on Ewen Maddock Dam but I had other comittments, that being catching up with with some awesome friends and spreading the Xmas cheer, going to bed at 1.30am and waking up with an axe in me head, (splitting headache), probably the heat ;D.

Looking forward to finishing up for the year and hav'in a spell, wet a line or two and spending much needed time with the family.

As Fitzy said when there is a stronger flow in the water it usualy brings food with it, I have found in the small creeks the bass find thier little hides where they sit in ambush, if you cast upstream and bring your lure past where you think they are hiding you should find them eventualy. In s/baits I find firetiger a good colour for dirty water.

Mate, you call that dirty water? I only wish some of ours were that dirty at the  moment. Mostly too thick to cultivate and too thin to navigate. All our Bass are getting around with white canes.
Cheers mate,
JD
PS Nice bass by the way.
