Title: Kayak Shoes
Post by: BrisBassMan on October 18, 2010, 02:36:49 PM
Guys,

I'm looking at buying a pair of shoes I can use with my kayak.  I have been using crocs(a cheaper version but you know what I mean) and well..... they just aren't cutting it.  I have looked around and found two types Keen Cimarron II and Keen Hood River Boot but the later I thinks isn't made any more as the website in the US only shows one size(7) :o

There is another model from Keen(Hydro Guide) but I am after something that doesn't let in the gravel and sand.

What do you guys use ?

Cheers
Geoff

Geoff I prefer the neoprene ankle length divers boot with the zip on the side, getting on/off the kayak the zips are closed and then sand, gravel, or suction in deep mud cause no problems, then when on the water just leave them unzipped them until going ashore again.

They can get hot in summer, but dangling the feet over the side in the water occasionally sorts out that problem although I very rarely do that myself.

I use the good ole Dunlop volleys, work well and are cheap. Used to wear crocs or similar but sick of twisting my ankle on slippery rocks.. I had the boots Dodge uses too, too dam hot for me...

Cheers

Have a look at the Mirage Rockhoppers. They are a little pricey for a wetboot, but they are by far the best oneI have ever seen or used. Google them up, and check them out.

Dive boots work a treat if you know you're going to be in & out of the kayak or doing some COD work (Carry Or Drag). If I'm staying in the kayak I just wear Crocs / Aussie Soles.

fitz..

I used to wear crocs, until I had a slippery encounter with the edge of a boat ramp and cracked 4 ribs. Now I wear cheap nasty velcro sandshoes from Kmart, really aggressive soles on them. Cost about $20 a throw and last quite a few trips amazingly enough. I wear them for getting in and out of the yak, but not whilst in it, I just chuck them in the anchor well.

Just dont sniff em after a couple of trips!

I just retired a pair of Crocs that I've worn on every fishing trip I've been on for the last 3 1/2 years.  They were getting a bit smooth in the sole.  I've got another pair that I'll keep wearing.  If I can get over three years out of a pair of $50 shoes, I'll keep using them.

Thanks guys.

If I were just fishing in a dam an not getting out to haul over rocks and mud then the crocs or cheaper versions are definitely the go.  However they just don't cut it when you gotta stand on rocks or walk through mud.

I did notice BCF had some cheap shoes that have a reasonably aggressive sole and are quite cheap so I might give them a go when I'm knocking about in the mud.

Cheers and thanks for everyone's thoughts and advice.    :youbeauty
