Title: Pack Angler seat upgrade
Post by: Sweetwater on January 01, 2013, 05:17:09 PM
THe Old Town Pack Angler canoe has many advantages and is a great canoe for sweetwater fishing. They are very light weight, durable, have a huge carrying capacity, draw little water (spread the weight over a large area), track well and for anyone with a crook back these canoes allow you to sit in a higher position than kayaks and put a bend in your knees taking the strain off the lower back.

One of the few drawbacks with the Old Town Pack angler is the hard moulded seat. While confortable enough wwith adjustable back rest to support lower back, the seat is a little slippery and hard after a long day on the water. Have used some closed cell foam padding but got to thinking about a better long term solution.
I checked out the new Comfort Zone Seat from Ocean Kayak and found it would just fit on top of the original seat base if the back was removed, exactly what I was trying to achieve.

A spanner and screwdriver had the old seat back out in a couple of minutes and a trip to the hardware store down the street saw me back with a couple of small brass eye bolts for a few bucks; these would give the rear seat clips a firm connection point. A pilot hole with the battery drill in the timber thwart behind the seat allowed the eye bolts to screw in firmly without affecting the timber.

To secure the front seat clips I simply used the existing plastic connection points for the work deck that comes standard with the Pack Angler (but I had decided to not use); easy as.....

End result, for a few bucks at the hardware plus a quality kayak seat and 20 minutes I've got a far better seat that gives better lower back support, is softer on the back side and is not slippery. A test paddle up the Stanley River proved the seat upgrade was definately worth the effort. I also get to use this deluxe style seat on my other kayaks, definately a bonus.
