Only small mate ~10cm, my guess is they've recruited in last year, probably with marine larval drift, the couple of wet years we've been having has probably helped the SE Qld Population's recruitment prospects and a bit of larval overdrift got this far south, not sure how many have ever formed a 'resident northern NSW' population and whether they'd ever viably breed - but certainly have been previous reports of large JPs from these systems being caught by bass fishers - so maybe if they do get to a critical population size we may see some local recruitment, feel winter temperature minimums would still pull em up in most freshwater around here,.. nother couple of decades of global warming might swing it ;)

"Prior to this my best advice was that they were currently unknown south of Townsville"

What about the population in Eli Crk on Fraser Island, been there since Joseph played fullback for the Jerusalem Colts???

and they do exist in the sunshine coast, been too many reports over the years to discredit them.

Interestingly the brood female used by Dept Fisheries a few years back was caught in the Brisbane River  :o

Brad
BRad, my "best advice" came from some very detailed research I did while preparing an article for a fishing magazine. There are apparently a number of JP strains, and there is always anecdotal evidence about all manner of things; especially fish. I can only surmise that the population of JP's on Fraser Island are a completely separate strain to those on the mainland.

John,

web availble information including fro state government agencies has suggested that JP were non existent south of Townsville (shoody fact checking)
http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/28_14682.htm
reality is the same agency' scientist are working with fish from Fraser Island and other refugial populations have been known to fishers for years including creeks south of Townsville(halfway to Bowen), north and south of Mackay, north of Bundaberg, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast and the odd strays to northern NSW
http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/28_20476.htm
There is  great review paper by Hutchison if I can find it (on other computer) I'll link it up for you.
If they can produce fingerlings - could probabaly kick start or mainatin populations in a number of catchments within this range

Jim,
Thanks for that mate,
I know there are a number of different strains of the fish and unlike yourself have only scratched the surface. However I would have thought that as so much of our water here is a little on the turbid side that would have been a problem for the JP's as they seem to prefer very clear streams. I'd be interested in that info you've got.

John,

think attached link isthe report I was thinking about
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B_zS6dnGFpjhMEoyLXpoa3RYemc

There are two species of jungle perch in Australia but the main one we're familiar with K.rupestris is the one that is distributed from NQ to northern NSW,it has been found to have very limited genetic differentiation probably because their marine larval stages are distributed by ocean currents and so there ends up being a fair bit of ongoing genetic flow between populations - Jim

Up the Sunshine coast yesterday, went for a quick dip net looking for some small natives. Got 2 JP's @ 35mm in a nice little  creek.

Have you had them in tanks before?  They're not very community orientated (will beat the sh!t out of everything) - but are class A1 when it comes to inteligence and character! :thumbsup
