NSW Jungle Perch
« on: October 22, 2012, 09:54:36 AM »
Always knew there were JP records from the Richmond River basin in NSW (from below the ol Casino Weir)  but just recently a mate of mine caught these two juvenile JPs in an adjoining system in the Byron Shire - be nice to find a couple of adult ones!

That sure is interesting but are they in an aquarium ? Were they collected for fisheries research or something ? Were they returned to the water of origin ? I don't want to sound critical but surely they can't be collected undersize unless with a permit or is it a case of as the fish aren't a recognised species (or are they) in NSW they don't have a state size limit. Please enlighten me. Just as an aside they apparently are found in some Sunny Coast streams as well. Cheers Pat.

RE: regs relating to Jungle Perch far as I'm aware there is no recognised bag or size limits for JPs in NSW other than the general limit of 10/day/in possession that applies non specifically to all other species other thanthe regulated ones so as long as they're taken using legal methods (in this case a dip net) there is no drama - also in Qld there is only a maximum (35cm) and no minimum size limit and a daily bag and possession limit of 1 - so therefore nbothing to stop you having one in a tank as long as its not over 35cm C:-)

Thanks for that info Jim. Yet again it has exposed one of the ridiculous rules of Fisheries - 10 in possession  but none over 35 cm (assuming this is breeding size) if they are all taken out of a system before that size they'll never reach the no take size. And yes they would make a nice aquarium pet. Cheers Pat.

the general rule of 10 in possession (for non specified species) is NSW, in Qld the JP in possession /dail bag limit is 1

I suppose that if the JP is not listed as being present in NSW waters then you could theoretically support an unlimited possession limit. Prior to this my best advice was that they were currently unknown south of Townsville, however they were once distributed down to Brisbane. Odd that they would turn up in the Richmond system?? Any chance they may have been introduced there?

"Prior to this my best advice was that they were currently unknown south of Townsville"

What about the population in Eli Crk on Fraser Island, been there since Joseph played fullback for the Jerusalem Colts???

and they do exist in the sunshine coast, been too many reports over the years to discredit them.

Interestingly the brood female used by Dept Fisheries a few years back was caught in the Brisbane River  :o

Great info JT, thanks for sharing.  :youbeauty I knew they once ranged down to the Richmond River (approx), still do apparently.  :youbeauty It gives me confidence that these great fish have some chance to recover on their own.

I know of a few criks in SEQ where Jungle Perch are still holding on by a thread, one of these is waaay incredible  :OMG  and other creeks where I was confinent of finding something turned up a big zip..... (No I won't share the locations folks).

Last one I heard of being caught in the Brisbane River was 1980, but I recon there still should be a couple holding in there, just cause we're too slack to catch them doesn't mean there arent any left about. JPs are possibly the smartest native fish I've seen, they can "wise up" very quick and are easily spooked.
