Title: Setting up Bait Caster
Post by: OzGreg on June 10, 2017, 10:49:00 AM
Hi Team

I have purchased my first bait caster on  a 6' 6-12kg rod.

I am spooling with 30kg braid but need help regarding the mono leader and how to attach it to braid.

So questions:

What is the best knot to join braid to mono leader ?
When I spool the reel, do I have to mono leader go around the spool  a few times so as to absorb the shock of casting?
What lb mono leader for is beat for barra impoundment fishing?

Cheers and thanks, Greg

The problem with heavy lines is the size of the knot going though the guides on the rod when casting. I don't have an answer for that. You asked a tough question = the size of the leader depends on how you intend catching the fish. If there are no snags you can go lighter but in heavy timber it's a different story. No easy answer I'm afraid.......

I'm assuming you meant 30lb braid I use an improved Albright knot for leader to braid about a rod length you don't want the leader to wrap around the spool as the knot will catch whilst casting increasing the risk of backlash and casting off your leader with lure attached
30lb fluorocarbon would be a fair starting point for leader but if your targeting big barra you would probably go heavier

I agree with dirvin..you can also use a double uni knot and add50cm of heavier shock trace at the end to protect from their gill plates..80/100lb..the knot stays out of the tip..rick

Hi Team

Thanks for the replies and the various options regarding the leader, knot and length.

I have purchased 30KG braid that is a just little bit thicker than the norm to allow for any abrasion which means I can try the 50cm leader eliminating the knot going through the guides.

All I need to know now is which is the magic lure to use for impoundments and best time of year?

Thanks all so far for the great advise, Greg
