JP's are fantastic in Tanks but not overly social. As has been stated they are brutal towards just about everything else. Incredibly inteligent though. They pick up on things extremely quickly.
As for distribution I will post a pic you may find interesting.
This photo clearly shows two species of JP's and was taken in Vanauatu. Rupestris is quite widespread apparently going out to around Fiji or so but in all there are 9 different species,

Interesting thread. I kept a few JP and never had problems with them but had a Sooty grunter that killed everything including a mangrove jack twice his size.
