Water level to be lowered at Lake Kurwongbah
Posted 8 May 2015    - Seqwater

Seqwater will begin lowering Lake Kurwongbah next week as part of the Dam Improvement Program.

A 2 by 2 metre opening has been cut on the western side of the spillway to reduce the full supply level of the lake by 2 metres to about 60% capacity.

Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Peter Dennis said lowering the water level would increase the ability of the dam to manage extreme floods.

“A fabricated cofferdam, or temporary enclosure, was installed alongside the spillway to enable the enclosed area to be pumped out, creating a dry work environment for the slot to be cut,” Mr Dennis said.

“A mechanism within the cofferdam will now control water flow out of the dam to reduce the level below the slot. When the level is below the slot, the cofferdam will be removed.”

Mr Dennis said the controlled release of water would minimise impacts on water quality and the environment.

He said the lowering of the lake water level would not affect local water supply.

Mr Dennis said detailed dam investigations were also underway to identify improvement works required and inform the longer term strategy for Lake Kurwongbah.
