NEWS –

Typical October where it doesn’t know if it’s summer or winter.
Over the weekend we experienced lovely sunny weather and temperatures up to higher 20’s and now over coming days possibility of snow to 1000 metres and temperatures lucky to reach 10 degrees. Is it any wonder the trout are all mixed up!
With dropping barometer the trout were a little slow over the weekend and catches were a little hard to come by but as we all know if you want to stir the trout into action just hit them with some cold miserable weather and they will always come on the bite.
The cold change will also stir up the last of the late spawning rainbow trout so expect the river fishing to be interesting to say the least but a lot is going to depend on just how much rain we get on top of that snow still on the mountain tops. If we do get heavy storms and rain then it will definitely stir up the river trout.
Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next couple of weeks.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATURE
Tomorrow, Tuesday there will be an 8 hour environmental release of water out of Jindabyne Dam down the Snowy River. Between the hours of 8am and 5pm the flood gates will open and 6,382 megalitres of water will be released over that period so we expect the lake level to drop a little but with so much rain and the predicted snow we should see a steady rise again very quickly.
Water temperatures on the lake are rising slowly also with the warmer days and sits at about 11 degrees C which should bring on the rainbows once it gets to about 13 degrees.

Best methods to catch a trout.
Best method – Some good trout to be caught in the Thredbo River at the moment.
Best lake lure –Tasmanian Devil holographic or red nosed bomber have both been good.
Best lake area – Creel Bay, Rushes Bay and Lion and Cub Islands.
Best fly method lake – Hamills Killer, Black Woolly Bugger and Williamson’s Goldfish.
Best River Fly Fishing– Black or brown weighted nymphs and caddis and ant patterns fir dry flies.
Best River Lures – Rapala type minnows get them down and fish them slow.
Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next few weeks.

Trolling.
A lot of smaller trout being caught at the moment, just about legal or a little over. These trout still have some ‘par’ marks which make them just about a year old and they are in very good condition which is great to see as by the end of summer these fish are going to be around that 35 to 40 cm and of course the future of our lake fishery so I wouldn’t complain too much. I expect the bigger rainbows to come on in the next couple of weeks once the water temperature gets up another few degrees. Meanwhile there are still plenty of very good conditioned brown trout being trolled up around the edges of the lake.
If trolling, start the day (before the sun hits the water) with a surface line out and at least 50 metres drop back, the more the better on still sunny days. Stay close to the shore and target rocky points and other snags like the many trees in the water at the moment for the bigger brown trout.
Later in the morning, try lead line at 2 to 3 colours. (20 to 30 metres of line out) later in the day or on still days and even downriggers to 30 feet.
Best colour Tassies have been holographic, Brown Bomber, green and gold yellowing type. Rapalas that look similar to our goldfish and spotted dog pattern have still been very successful.
Little bit of downrigging at 20 to 30 feet on the bright sunny days. Use longer dropbacks for best results.

Lake Bait Fishing
(Primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Industry and Investment NSW (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers
in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAIT FISH in the RIVERS!)
Shore based bait fishing continues to be good with local Scrubbies, and artificial baits the best.
The water temperature is still quite cold so mudeyes, while they still will catch a trout are very hard to find at the moment.
The Claypits, Hatchery Bay, Town Centre near front of Banjo Patterson Park and The Snowy Arm are better spots.

Lake Spinning
No change in the lure spinning. Same lures are still working but like the trolling most lures will work ok if you’re in the right place for an aggressive trout. Blades in gold have been doing well at the moment. Try a sall
The Tasmanian Devil Holographic, Pink, orange, Y82 and Y48 have all been good and so is the Holographic.
Minnow lures like floating Rapalas, (especially jointed Rapalas), Stumpjumpers and other minnow style lure in either natural rainbow trout and brown trout patterns or gold colours to represent the Jindabyne goldfish that the trout love to chase and eat. Warlock lure in greenish colours and work it slowly through the shallows.
Don’t stay in one place too long and only put in a couple of casts in each area.
Shallow areas try Gillies Feathertails and Tailwalkers which are new products worth a look.
Some new lures to try in the dark are the new glow Blue Fox Vibrax spinners. Charge them up with a torch or camera flash and watching them spin through the water is incredible, trout are very inquisitive and often hit the lure hard.
Call into my shop and I will show you some of the better soft plastics that we are having great success on over the last week. The ‘Spotted Brew’ Strike Tiger has especially been good over the last week.

River Spinning
The weekend was quite good for lure anglers with success right through the day. You had to work the snags and the lures needed to get down and were best worked very slow in the very cold and quite often faster water. I would expect after the rain and snow the river will become a little stained and the spinning should be great.
Looking like a great season ahead.

Fly fishing Rivers and Streams
There have been a few fish rising to dries with the warmer days and we have even had an ant hatch over the weekend stirring some of the trout into surface feeding. We do have rain and another cold change tomorrow so it might be the end of the week before things pick up again for dry fly anglers. Caddis, ant and even beetle patterns are working at the moment.

Fly Fishing Lake
Woolley Bugger, a Craig’s Night time or a Williamson’s Goldfish will be the best over the next few days while the wet and cold weather is with us. Back to better weather by the weekend and even may see a little late evening dry fly on the lake. Caddis and Mayfly hatches have occurred on the lake over the last weekend.
The shallow bays on the lake are worth a try but you have to be very quiet and not too many casts in one spot so as not to spook the trout.
Have you any photos that you can e-mail me?
I can use the information to add into my own reports and your photo might not only end up in my report but might also go into a draw for the best fish of the month which will win you a $50 Tassie Devil Tackle Pack.
