Just wondering if anyone has used Pecan or Hickory (I have been led to believe these are the same) in making lures.Alternatively,does anyone have opinions on using these timbers for freshwater lures.I recently came into possesion of a quantity of short pieces (300mm=400mm) of trunk originaly sourced to smoke food with but as I'd like to play around with making my own lures again I was curious as to wether it would be worth having some milled up.Any thoughts or ideas welcome.

Hickory is not the exactly the same as Pecan, although the Pecan is of the same family of trees (Carya).
Hickory is tough dense and hard to work with hand tools. Not really suitable for lures unless you just want a display piece. Pecan is much the same.

From memory ,in the US they used hickory to make handles for tools ,hammers axes ect. My favourite for lures is beech. Many years ago I pulled a ten foot section of beech log out of a creek up near mapleton. The top half had been taken by timber getters but the bottom section had some fire damaged. The log had been laying there for over eighty years. It was in near perfect condition except for the outer half inch and is so well seasoned it floats like balsa. The grain is very even and tight. I made a batch of ten inch bibbless minnows to take on a trip out to wreck reef and even the wahoo had trouble doing much worse than wrecking the paint job...Ron.

Hickory is great for gun stocks and axe handles. Lures I reckon it would be very hard to work, but bullet proof if you can get a finished product from it. Not sure how well it would float...???
Pecan? I got nothing...

Cedar is a great option Banshee if you want to dable into lure making, it can be hard to come by, but I'm sure timber merchants will stock it if you are prepared to search.

OK sounds like it might be more trouble than it's worth so I'll leave it for smoking.Had a bit of sucess a few years back useing the frame wood from internal doors (masonite clad type),might still have some of that kicking about along with a bit of cedar.Looks like I'll have to get my eye back in on some scrap pine then move on to the better stuff.Thanks for the replies everyone.
