Traveston Crossing and Amamoor Creek
« on: February 27, 2017, 02:06:43 PM »
Hi
Im mew to the forum.  Ive been fishing the Mary River, Amamoor Creek and Yabba Creek for nearly 25 years.
Amamoor Creek
Used to get massive Yellow Belly and Spangled, large bony bream, red belly perch and the odd Cod.
Recently been getting lots of Grunter and small bass.  A few yella belly and the odd spangled.  Great shrimp and yabbies around the second bridge past the amamoor shop.  Great lure fishing down river from the Amamoor railway bridge.  Also take some live shrimp there and will get a hit 4/5 casts.  The bigger the bait and sinker the bigger the fish....given the right deep fast flowing areas with some tree cover.  Also a great little buzz walking accross the railway bridge fully loaded with equipment.
Traveston
Was doing some kayak fishing and getting good bass, the odd accidental lung(amasing to see these fish close up, before a safe release) and lots of salmom catfish.
Am now targetting shore fishing through there.  Lots of bass, grunter, perch, odd cod.  Live shrimp is the best bet in my opinion.  Catching everything they catch on lures.  Also digging around gravel banks right on the water will give you great Mole Crickets which especially the yella belly and bass just smash everytime.  You will have to figure out the best way to bait them on your hook.
Also at the right time of the day on the right sand beds you will get giant freshwater mussels popping up.  One or two large ones will give you plenty of great bait for natives.  But they are getting fewer by morons collecting them for no reason.
Also be carefull of the 4wds in certain areas as they get a little rowdy.  If anyone reading this 4wds up there just slow down and dont destroy the river and banks...walk through the creek instead of driving through as fast as you can go.
Just wanting to see if anyone else has some good tips to pass on as i havent seen this amount of marine life in 25 years.
Also ive had the most luck through there at dawn or dusk when they are releasing good amounts of water from borumba....the fish get all giddy.
