Hey there all lure gurus,
I want to give this lure making a go, but want to make sure I know where to get the gear before I start. I live in the general Ipswich vicinity and am having difficulty finding some suitable stainless lockwire for the hook hangers and polycarbonate for the bibs. Is there any locals on the forum that can point me in the right direction? Pretty please! Also, any recommendations on good timber to use? I've heard that Jelutong is really good. Where can I get some? Thanks heaps for any info.

Beetle, Jelutong is good, White Meranti also, Red Cedar and White beech are traditional lure timbers and all should be available from local sources or at least from SEQ area.
Specialty timber yards are the best spot to try. Red Cedar is also found in some older furniture, so try second hand shops....
Polycarbonate is usually used by sign makers and you should be able to scrounge some offcuts cheaply. For stainless wire go to a GOOD tackle shop and get some Masons Downunder trace wire, 80 - 100lb will do most lures. Charltons should have some or be able to get it.

Hi,
I make mine with white beech use mig welding wire for the hook hangers and get the bibs made, but you need to order at least 100 bibs.

They will sell you 900mm of DAR if you only want that, will cost you about 5 bucks / meter

Wire - why ss? just making up hook hangers? if so Bunnings sell whites wires get a small roll of 0.9mm or if you are doing big boys then 1.2mm.
Polly carb - hmm probably closest will be cottage plastics at sumner park 1.5mm will do the job or big boys 2mm

Bloke is a cock and really just get onto Dean at Hubers joinery and ask for a info pack. Other than that there is Laserworx at noosaville. They both sell premade / cut shapped bibs.

Lionel, it looks like you use the "through wire" method for your hook hangers. Do you have any pics on how you do this?
StevenM, I specified SS as several of the references I've been researching said not to stuff around and just go with SS to be on the safe side. Is the stuff you mentioned the galv tie wire they sell in Bunnings? I would have thought it wouldn't be too durable??? Happy to be corrected though.

No I don't run the wire through the lure but glue the twisted part into the lure.

I use the bunnings whites wires 0.9 and 1.2mm stuff and it is no probs at all.
I do not use through wire, I glue in like Lionel but my twists are a whole lot closer. Will posta pic up later on.

that cedar sales link is for Western Red Cedar, imported from the USA. quite usable for lures, just take care as the dust is very irritating to the nose and throat, wear a dust mask when sanding.
