It seems that most people tend to have kayaks and only a few have gone for a canoe. What are everyone's main reasons for choosing what they have. Things I can think of in favour of yaks are price, variety in models, designated storage, stability, ability to be used in salt/offshore situations. Any others?

Canoes are not trendy ;)
Seriously for me, I started in canoes, but did not like the 3-4 inches of freeboard separating me from the bottom.
With a sit on top, its unsinkable, all a big wave can do is give you a wet bum.

It's only recently that a decent, light, single seat canoe has been readily available on the Australian market. The traditional 15' 2 seater canoe is a pig to operate one up. I have both canoes and kayaks, and both have their place on the water. If I could only have one I'd probably pick an Old Town Pack Angler.

I have a tinny that I use to get out into the bay chasing fish, and even the local creeks. For me the main reason I want a canoe is to get up into the fresh water end of the creeks and rivers. I have had an 18ft Roscoe and it was great but too big for one to get onto the car (40kg), then I went to a Hobie PA which was awesome but same weight as the canoe and heaps harder to get onto the roof racks. A small canoe will be light enough for me to throw onto the car, I am not planning to get heaps of accessories so hopefully portage will be convenient also. Some of the steep banks on the side of the rivers might prove a bit of a challenge to get in and out of, but that will be the same with either craft I suspect.

but as dale has pointed out there is now starting to be a few "single" seat light canoes getting out there

Get an Old Town Pack Angler - I love mine to bits, if only time would allow me to get her on the water a bit more! 3.7mtrs, 14.9 kgs, nice and stable with a folding back rest on the seat, no wet bum :youbeauty

I have looked at both since I made my one sheet canoe and experienced the excitement, :OMG of a tippy canoe with 3 inches of freeboard.
What I like about canoes is you can make them yourself and they are cheap but the small ones are very tippy and take some nerves to operate.
Kayaks are super stable but more expensive and everyone I know gets a wet bum from wash and water from the oars.
So good and bad with both but the price is the deciding factor at the mo and I like to make things myself.
