Manton Dam Closed

The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT advises that Manton Dam Recreation Area is closed to the public, following reports of a suspected estuarine (saltwater) crocodile sighting at the Dam.

Regional Chief Ranger Nigel Weston said it is the third closure in the past few months, however safety is the number one priority at the popular recreation area and that is why it has been decided to close the dam again until further notice.
“The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT received information from a member of the public this morning about a possible estuarine (saltwater) crocodile sighting at the ski beach last weekend,” Mr Weston said.
“The Crocodile Management Unit will commence ongoing spotlighting surveys of Manton Dam tonight before any decision is made about water-based activities over the weekend.

“The decision to reopen the Manton Dam to recreational activities including, fishing, and water-based sports, will be reassessed by the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT tomorrow afternoon, after the Crocodile Management Unit has undertaken a comprehensive crocodile survey of the area.

“The public is urged to report any suspected estuarine crocodile sighting to the Crocodile Management Unit on 0419 822 859.”
The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT urges the public to BE CROCWISE and remember that croc danger is real, so don’t risk your life. For more information visit www.nt.gov.au/becrocwise.
