Title: No saltwater yabbies allowed as bait in sweetwater - Reminder
Post by: Editor on March 16, 2015, 10:36:08 AM
A reminder of new regulation in Qld

Live or dead (unless frozen) salt water yabbies are no longer permitted in any sweet water in Qld

Quote
Prohibition on the use of marine baits in freshwater systems

Introduction of disease or parasites into new areas can have serious impacts on native fish populations and may impact on the future viability of freshwater fish stocking programs. While to date there are no reports of this having occurred in Australian freshwater systems, recent risk assessments show that there is heightened risk of disease transfer between catchments through the use of freshwater animals such as fish and crustaceans and saltwater animals such as yabbies, prawns and small fish as bait. While there are already specific regulations controlling the use of some live bait to help prevent disease transfer, these are believed to be inadequate given the expansion of recreational fishing in freshwater.

To prevent the spread of disease and parasites in Queensland's freshwater systems, the use of baits from the marine (saltwater) environment has been prohibited unless the bait has been frozen, cooked or preserved.

Would like to know how they process the saltwater yabbys to preserve them. They are not cheap to purchase.
Cheers

Preserved means to maintain something in its existing state, or stop decomposition.

Therefore, in a tank with a bubbler and they are preserved are they not? Kept in their existing state and will not decompose.

They really do need to get legal advice before they publish changes to rules.

Quote from my favourite site in the whole interweb universe, spelling and punctuation aren't mine, I haven't tried it myself, but have heard of the metho treatment previously:

Re: How to preserve your yabbies

Another way is to dry the yabbies on some paper towel, them put them in metho in an ice cream container for around ten minutes then remove and dry again on the paper towel. once dry put them in a freezer bag and away you go.just pull them out when you want to use them. i was very sceptical about the metho but have been out fished by the mate so many times i now use them too for sand whiting.i still use fresh ones but have seen great resultd with metho ones.
