That's Nature I guess
« on: October 15, 2010, 07:50:53 AM »
 G'day All,

Went for a walk a few kilometres below North Pine Dam this morning just to see what damage etc had been done.  The usual rubbish and weed matter evidenced up trees some 9 ft up!!  Unfortunately there has been a loss to the NPD Bass stocks with several fish seen floating in the twin dams at Mungarra Reserve the one fish that I could get a measure on went approx 45cm (handspan conversion), condition was harder to ascertain due to swelling. Other fish floating in the same system look to have been of similar size with one model I am certain would have gone 50cm.  That's nature I guess however still a bitter pill to swallow  :'(  Makes my decision to join the PRFMA a good one and I look forward to contributing in some small way to assist in replenishing the stocks in the future. :thumbsup

Regards
Colin

Good on you for getting involved Colin.

Yep, the loss of fish in flood events is a natural thing even without having dams across our river.

Being stocked bass they are a replacable species.

Gates were closed and SEQ Water moved Lungfish that were stranded to deeper water along with whatever other fish they could below the dam.
Several Prfma members and some locals who know the spots where Lungfish strand did a run through below SEQ Water area down to lower reaches over the last few days and moved a lot also. Did a run down the river myself early today and moved a couple of lungfish that had been missed and some other fish   ;)
This release was the largest ever recorded, all the work done below the dam has been completely scoured out, with rain falling at the moment more water may be released.

cheers
Steve.

Steve I thought by what had been said at the meetings that SEQ water did not want any of us near that area.

Dino, SEQ Water will only let us in their area with permission and under supervision.
Spent yesterday morning there the gates were opened again, not a big release river rose about 2 meters.

cheers,
Steve.
