Title: Monduran - Where There's Smoke, Theres Barra...
Post by: BR65 on October 03, 2011, 07:38:08 PM
Have just returned from a weeks fishing up at Lake Monduran, and I can report that there are DEFINATLY still Baramundi in the dam!
Initially I was targetting wind blown weedy points in the tried and trusted method, rolling large soft plastics looking for bigger fish, but at the moment that seems to be a low percentage return, and it appears that a large number of big grls have left the building.
All is not lost though, there are plenty of smaller fish in the backs of the bays in the skinny water, and still the odd big girl lurking, I was smoked by one large fish early Saturday morning that certainly got the heart rate up, and jumped off a couple of others that had me wondering! In saying that, the majority of fish encountered ranged from Bass sized to high 60's, small in stature but still with that typcal pugnascious Barramundi nature, give these fish a couple of years and its game on again!
Local guides have been locating the fish for clients, and a NSW crew had a cracker session late last week matting 11 fish, and then apparently backed it up the next day with a good session again.
The bird life is prolific, Pelicans, Shags, Cormorants are feasting on the massive bait schools, and the White Chested Eagles are soaring over all of them keeping a close eye out for any opportunities. Plenty of the usual bank side suspects, including Wallabies, Roos, Echidnas, Goannas and snakes were encountered.
Bush fires have been raging through the area, making for some spectacular, if not a little smokey, early morning and late afternon sessions!
The dam is huge now, and a days fishing can mean not seeing another boat at all, so its definately worth a look.

Was there any particular lure they favoured on particular days Brian and how tentative were they striking or were they aggressively hitting the lures.

Nice shot of the sunset too! :youbeauty

Dave, there were a lot of Banded Grunter schooling in the drowned tree tops mate, and that Richos was the closest thing I had to "match the hatch" - it semed to go OK suspending.
Strikes were typical barra mate, heart attack stuff just as you are dozing off mid retrieve.
cheers
Brian

Thanks for the report Brian, good to hear some positive info for a change. I am heading up there for a few days in early November, the first stop on my "Redundancy Fishing Trip". Six weeks of camping, fishing & catching up with mates, roll on the 4th Nov.

Cheers Andrew

Nice report & images Brian, thanks for sharing.  :thanks

Those Richos are good lures. I've caught some good barra on them in the rustwater further up the coast (smaller model tho).

Good to see there's still some barra there to be caught, the fishing can only get better as summer rolls on...fingers crossed.
