Murray Cod Closed Season Coming Up
Why do we have closed seasons?
Closed seasons (regulated periods) prevent people from taking particular species at certain times of the year. This protects these species at vulnerable times in their life cycle, such as during spawning seasons. Murray cod cannot be taken from the Barwon, Macintyre or Dumaresq Rivers from 1 September to 30 November.
On another note, the closed season for Australian Bass finishes on 31st August, so from the 1st September I’m sure there will be plenty of people heading down to the Brisbane River, below Wivenhoe Dam to target the Bass that came out of the dam during the floods earlier in the year.

COOBY DAM / CRESSBROOK DAM
Not a lot to report from these two dams, the fishing has been very hit and miss, however there are still a few Redclaw coming out of Cressbrook.

SOMERSET DAM
Somerset was the venue for last weekends ABT Bass Pro fishing tournament, which saw 117 anglers competing over 3 sessions. The fishing was still a bit tough, with a total of 210 fish weighed in, the biggest total weight for the 3 sessions was 6.93kg. The biggest Bass for the event was 3.53kg, the majority of the fish were taken on Ice Jigs or Blades.

LESLIE DAM
The Yellowbelly have become a bit more active over the past week, with a few fish taken mainly on live worms and shrimp.

COOLMUNDA DAM
The timbered area of the dam seems to be the place to go if you want to catch a Yellowbelly, the best methods have been using live shrimp and trolling Spinnerbaits.

GOONDIWINDI
The upper and lower reaches of the Macintyre River are producing some great Cod and Yellowbelly, try using Spinnerbaits and hard body lures when targeting these fish and live bait off the banks has also proven to be successfull.

GOLD COAST/TWEED
The offshore fishing has been quiet due to the wet and windy conditions experienced along the coast this week, but the closer reefs should fire up once the conditions settle. Inshore has seen good catches of quality Tailor off the Pump Jetty at Southport, plenty of Bream in the gutters off the beaches, around structure in the estuaries and off the Seaway wall and good numbers of Mud Crabs starting to show up around the mouths of Coombabah and Pimpama Rivers.

SUNSHINE COAST
A bit quiet offshore here as well, due to the weather, but there was a few big Snapper around before the bad weather set in. Closer reefs were the pick of the spots, using live bait, with the biggest fish caught weighing in at 11.5kg. Innshore has seen plenty of Tailor caught around the 45cm mark off the beaches and in the rivers, there has been good catches of Bream and Flathead.

HERVEY BAY
The Tailor are still biting off Fraser, just starting to see a few greenbacks in amongst them, there has also been good numbers of Whiting, Dart and the odd Mulloway as well. The fishing could be a bit difficult over the next week with strong sweeps predicted along the beaches due to the current, strong South Easterly winds.
