A day on the Downs
« on: May 17, 2014, 11:29:11 PM »
After hearing about WayneD and Bushwacker were planning just a day trip out to the Dumaresq, I was lucky enough to be able to meet up with them out at Texas.

Leaving home just after 5am, I hit the road and travelled via Toowoomba, the other two were going via Warwick. Dawn broke just out of Toowoomba on the Cunningham Hwy and the day looked great.

Once turning off onto the Toowoomba-Karara Rd, I stopped for a couple of quick pics of the Condamine. I have never fished anywhere on this river but I am keen to discover more about it sometime in the future.

Another two hours later or so I caught up with boys at Texas and grabbed brekky. If in Texas, you have to check out the Ford's Family Store. Its also a shrine to Dick Johnson and Lee Kernaghan.

There I convinced the Wayne and Steve it was a good idea to go down to Beebo and fish the section of river below Cunningham weir. So off we went in convoy.

The seen we were greeted with on arrival.

Not another soul anywhere. So we rigged up and headed downstream in the kayaks.

It became quickly apparent that this stretch of river has a high level of fishing pressure upon it. Not only was it very slow going action wise but there were many setlines , some old, some new that adorned most of the snags. The ones we checked out didn't appear to be in use though. We pressed on in the hope that the fish may come on as the day progressed.

We even had time to ponder about the job this landholder had done on his part of the river bank. It stops erosion right?

Wayne was overcome by a migraine at this stage and decided to bail, he headed back to to the car and went into Texas to get some pannadol, Steve and I pushed on. Almost at the point where we were thinking about turning around, Steve hooks onto a decent cod.

On the mat it went 74cm, a new pb for him.

The type of snag a fish like this calls home.

We turned around and headed back. Steve caught a couple of Yellowbelly along the way. One Black phase.

One yellow phase.

The only other fish landed for the day was another yella which I caught in the morning but I didn't take any pics of it. I may add video later.

Back at the cars, it was only mid arvo....still time for a plan B. Which turned out to be a short drop in session on McIntyre Brook upstream of Inglewood. By this stage my still camera was running low on battery, so here is the only picture of the brook that I took.

No fish were landed at this location but I had an awesome surface strike. See youtube clip later in the thread. Thanks for reading.

Cheers,
Dave.

You could, but do you really want to drag that heavy hobie over logs and through the portages. Get a 2nd hand yak that you can treat as if it was stollen for the job. :)

The audio is a bit raw, but it adds to the experience.

Awesome surface strike, that's why we do it right there!
Was that a jackal you were throwing with those fold back "wings"?

This thread is old. :popcorn)

I haven't seen any reports from the boys who fished yesterday.
