Upper Richmond Bass 19/2/12
« on: February 28, 2012, 11:08:24 AM »
Got together with a couple of good mates and my son and did a 9K kayak down the upper Richmond the weekend before last. Didn't get bowled over with fish but got 15 between us for the trip and every body got some - son Jules (again) got the biggest 39cm, last year later in the year (May) we did the same stretch of river and got a much bigger class of fish 40-47 cm. my theory is those bigger ones are still higher in the system and will come down as the breeding season approaches. The river was beautiful - rheemed out after the floods - flowing bit higher (great for kayaking less portage) and ultra clear - in fact it was so clear I think it affected the take on spinner baits - seemed like we had to use bit more darker subtle colours instead of the bright yellow/oranges we usually prefer for bit discoloured water- was great day out interspersed with swims to cool off the hot summer sun and crystal hunting on the freshly exposed rock/gravel bars - Jules new passion, by the end of the day the ballast load of crystals up the front of our kayak was giveing us a nose down attitude.. ;D

Yeah mostly mate, there is a bit of supplemental stocking done in the Richmond (not sure of its current status) but the river does enjoy a pretty healthy wild bass population!
