Need to transport bushwalkers up Lake yarrunga Tallowa dam to Bundanoon crk junction. Thinking of using a 3.6 meter inflatable carrying 4 people with a 55lb ebay electric outboard. Distance is about 14k round trip. No one can tell me what km/h I can do in such a loaded inflatable and how much deep cycle battery amp hours I will need. It was suggested that I ask on this forum as someone here might know this. Appreciate any help Paddy. PS only electric motors allowed on the dam. Paddy

14k's at approximately 3 kmh would be about a 4 1/2 hour trip. If the motor is drawing about 30 amps you'll need 4.5 x 30 = 140 amp hours of battery each way. 3 x 120ah batteries should do the return trip with some spare. Then again, running the motor for 4.5 hours at full speed may overheat it. It would be much faster and cheaper to put them in two double kayaks and have them paddle.
(These calculations are approximate, depending on the Electric Motor used, the Battery used, the boat used and the weight of the people and the amount of equipment carried.)

Hi Padriac, Dale's on the money with those figures. I've got 2 x 55lb electrics on my 4.3m aluminium boat & flatout can travel about 5kph. It would take me nearly 3 hours to travel the 14km you say you need to do.
Four people plus their gear in an inflatable? I suggest a bigger boat, more electric power (& therefore more batteries) & a good insurance policy.

Thanks for the replies. Does not look feasible, and I dont think electric motors allowed on the Tallowa, awaiting a call on that. Plan know is to walk down the Bundanoon crk to lake Yarrunga from Wingello and then to walk back again, was trying to avoid that but looks like that is the go. Paddy

If they're bush walkers, they should enjoy the stroll. I'd prefer about a 450cc Quad myself.

If you go the ebay leccy be careful as a lot of them have a warning not to use full power continuously. I had one for a while and ended up burning it out.
Also the weight of 3 X 120 a/h batteries will be well over 90kg so what is the rated load of the inflatable?
Walking does sound the better option.

Dale's got the right idea, about the quad I mean. But seriously that inflatable is going to be really well loaded and it's mass alone will offer heaps of resistance through the water. The weight of the batteries would probably equate to one well formed bushwalker.
