Clarrie Hall Dam Road to be closed to public during spillway upgrade

Spillway capacity to be increased to pass extreme flood events

Contractors for Tweed Shire Council are set to commence works next month on an upgrade of the Clarrie Hall Dam spillway, pending final State Government approval to begin works.

The construction works will necessitate the closure of the road leading to the dam wall, Clarrie Hall Dam Road, which is located three kilometres south-west of Uki. This road will remain closed to the general public for up to 14 months until May 2014 while works are carried out, weather permitting.

Residents who live along the road have been consulted about the project and will continue to be able to access their properties during construction. Principal contractor, Entracon Civil Pty Ltd, will continue to liaise with residents throughout the process to ensure uninterrupted access.

Alternative access to Clarrie Hall Dam at Crams Farm via Doon Doon Rd (head towards Kyogle and turn left after approximately eight kilometres).

"The purpose of the upgrade is to increase the spillway capacity to ensure the dam can safely pass extreme flood events in accordance with the new standards established by the NSW Dam Safety Committee," Project Director, Michael Wraight, said.

The spillway upgrade works involve widening and extending the existing spillway. The spillway crest will not be raised and there will be no change to the storage's full supply level or the storage inundation area.

A parapet wall across the dam crest will raise the existing wave wall to accommodate flood waters and to provide increased freeboard (the area between the top water level of the dam and the top of the dam structure). Construction access will be gained from the eastern side of the dam wall via the existing road.

Further information about the spillway capacity upgrade can be obtained from Council's website at www.tweed.nsw.gov.au. Go to 'Our Services', click on 'Water and Wastewater' then 'Clarrie Hall Dam' and then 'Clarrie Hall Dam Spillway upgrade'.
