Title: how to catch large catfish.
Post by: riverhunter on April 14, 2014, 07:02:05 PM
Good evening
There's a few good ways to catch the bigger catfish. We like to use a 5-10kg snapper rod at logans inlet. I set the rod against esky with spool open.  Then paddel out a fare good distance with live bait in bucket  once the line is set wave to may at esky and she flips the catch on reel and leaves drag set light. This way u don't use a sinker just one hook in live bait . Also the large prawns from wollworths at fervale are effective rigged on hook without sinker. Caught a decent catfish using tsunami prerigged SP in boat.570mm is best catfish from wivenhoe for us but seen another man catch 800mm one in lake on his boat.

Yah true 5-10kg rod is bit heavy for freshwater fishing .I just choose this one because had so many cheap Kmart rods snap . Usaly running 15pound braid with 30 pound big game leader . 5000 reel this set up doubles as cod and Barra fishing outfit with big lures.

If you want a rod that won't self destruct , go for the Silstar, Crystal Power Tip 3-6kg ( we bought ours at Charltons )
This rod is practically indestructable.
Ana matched it with a Shimano Symetre 2500, with 8 lb briad and 12 lb mono leader to land this forky a few years back. It gave her a good fight and a lot of fun.
Cheers

I have silstar4-7kg lure rod 10-30grams casting .with Abu Garcia f1000 reel 10 pound braided line. Caught so many fish on lure with this set up . caught a bass from the rock wall / cliff.in our boats just casted it landed on steap bank . Give the line a twitch and the lure fell in the water bass took it on the drop next to rock wall. a good 35cm catch and release I'm surprised it took that tsunami prerigged softplastic blue minnow fish most of my bass I've caught on 6 or 8cm diving minnows.   And kokoda vibe lures .lots of 30cm 35 cm .42cm Australian bass is my best. Got a catfish and bass on same gold minnow .
