Whopper: junior angler lands record-breaking catch
Mex Cooper  February 22, 2011 - 1:16PM

Nine-year-old Riley Vallance wasn't going to let his record-breaking catch be the one that got away, even if the barramundi was bigger than him.

The budding angler hauled in a 27.6-kilogram fish during a competition held by Mission Beach Fishing Club in far north Queensland last Friday.

Riley was fishing in Lake Tinaroo on the Atherton Tableland when he managed to snare the barramundi that is believed to be a world-record.

Advertisement: Story continues below Riley's father, fish biologist Terry Vallance, said his son had pestered him to take part in the competition, despite the late start at 9pm. The pair joined the club just an hour before so they could enter.

The schoolboy used a lure while trolling in his dad's 4.3-metre dinghy to catch the 1.32-metre fish.

It took 20 minutes for the fish to tire and as it jumped under the glare of the moonlight, Mr Vallance realised it was a whopper.

"I busted every muscle in my body trying to lift it into the boat," he said.

A stunned Riley, who caught his first barramundi aged five, immediately rang and woke his mother to tell her the news.

He was left with sore arms but swept the club's prize pool.

"I think he was very proud at the time. He ended up winning all the prizes pretty much. He got himself a lovely fishing rod and reel," Mr Vallance said.

The club is entering the catch for the International Game Fish Association's Small Fry category (children aged up to 10), for heaviest barramundi.

Mr Vallance said there was plenty of paperwork to fill out and Riley would even have to agree to undergo a lie detector test as part of the process that can take months.

The current Australian junior barramundi record with the Game Fishing Association of Australia is 27.1 kilograms.

Mr Vallance said his phone hadn't stopped ringing with media calls from across the country today.

His usually shy son took his fishing trophy to school yesterday but since leaving for class this morning had been unaware of the media interest he had sparked.

"I had New Idea ring today would you believe? It's New Idea - what do they do about fishing? But strangely enough I haven't had a single call from a fishing magazine," Mr Vallance said.

The Vallances took the barramundi home but unfortunately weren't prepared to store such a large fish and had to bury it in their backyard.

‘‘We didn’t expect to catch much at all to be honest. I didn’t have an Esky or ice or freezer space to keep it in ... hopefully it grows some nice tomatoes next year’’.

Lake Tinaroo is a man-made fishery stocked annually for anglers; the fish do not breed because of a lack of salt water.
