You’re not from around here, are you?

You’re not from around here, are you?

Translocated fish are fish found where they do not occur naturally, even though they can be native to Australia.

In the Thompson River, in the Lake Eyre Basin of Western Queensland, researchers are now finding increasing numbers of sleepy cod (Oxyeleotris lineolata). This fish is native to coastal rivers from Noosa, Queensland, to the Ord River in Western Australia. It appears likely that these fish, which can grow to 3kgs, have established themselves after being dumped from an aquaculture operation.
One of the reasons their ongoing presence is of concern is that they are likely competitors of the Coopers Creek Catfish, which is only found in the Cooper / Barcoo / Thompson Rivers and about which little is known. To read more, download the following (1.6Mb) and scroll to page 7:

I'll be fishing at Muttaburra 12th and 13th May mainly looking for Yellas. Nice slim fat free yellas.
My contact up there told me the system had Sleepy Cod but I didn't believe him, until now.
If I happen to see one I'll take a pic for you.

Well if you're thinking of heading out to Muttaburra to fish you might want to wait until they get some decent rain. The locals say it's 5 years since they had any half decent rain and not holding their breathe for the next downpour.

But we did manage 2 yellas. One 32cm and the other 47cm.
The Redclaw were there but not in big numbers because they have just had a major event out there and the Broadwater was fished very hard.

The Sleepy Cod are everywhere you find some structure. They even get into the operahouse traps (with the little catfish and grunter).

I'll attempt to post a few pics. Hope it works as this is my first try.

The Sleepy Cod are not alone being introduced as you know and the poor old yabby is headed for extinction in this system the way it's going.
The only place (according to the locals) to find yabbies now is on local property dams and bore drains.

The damn Redclaw have hit them pretty hard. Good eating but destructive little critters.
