Newman Government casts a line for feedback

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
 The Honourable John McVeigh

Newman Government casts a line for feedback

More than 13,000 Queensland households will soon be asked to provide information about recreational fishing, as part of a new survey aimed at improving the sustainability of marine resources.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said the survey would start on Monday 19 August and would seek details on recreational fishing to better support regional fishing communities.

“With over 700,000 recreational fishers in Queensland, our fishing resources must be accurately managed to ensure the environmental and economic viability of the sector,” Mr McVeigh said.

“This survey delivers on the Newman Government’s $1 million election commitment to implement enhanced recreational fishing monitoring to help improve sustainability measures and safeguard Queensland’s marine resources.”

Mr McVeigh said recreational fishing provided an important economic benefit for local businesses, from bait and tackle stores to campsites and grocery stores.

“Building on the 2010 recreational fishing survey, this new survey will collect more regionally focused information on where and how people fish, what they catch and the type of fishing experiences they want,” Mr McVeigh said.

“We will be surveying the whole state, with balanced representation from 15 regions.

“Our goal is to understand not just the fish species caught, but also the way we fish, so we can better tailor our fisheries management.

“This information will help stimulate regional economies by highlighting recreational fishing opportunities throughout Queensland.”

Fisheries scientist Dr James Webley, who will coordinate the survey for Fisheries Queensland, said accurate and timely information on recreational catch was necessary to sustainably manage Queensland’s fisheries.

“This survey will deliver the most reliable and current information to date about recreational fishing in Queensland,” he said.

“The telephone-diary survey will collect information regularly from fishers for 12 months, and many other recreational fishers will be able to contribute through other monitoring programs at key locations.

“Importantly, the results will be directly comparable to previous surveys, providing a vital time series on recreational fishing in Queensland and helping to make robust assessments of our fisheries.”

So what about the data collected from similar surveys over the past decade or so...did that make any difference to the decisions to put in green zones, reef closures etc.

Or is this just another way to appease the minority who complain more about what the government did not do that they promised to do????

The major parties are all painted with the same whitewash brush.

so we can better tailor our fisheries management.

Excuse the pun

What a great idea.  Good to see the LNP Government taking a positive step, unlike the way the other mob handled things both in this State and Federally.  It was following something like this that Tom Burns introduced the SIP Scheme and how good is that!

They may even come up with to reallocating the RFEP funds back to where they have been traditionally used since 1986.
Was not Tom Burns a member of the other mob?
Actually he was the only person including the present member who ever got off his butt and did anything positive for rec anglers.
Cheers
Ray
