Kayak Paddle/Rod Leash's
« on: February 08, 2012, 08:01:23 PM »
G'day guys & gals,
Well I finally bit the bullet and got a small SOT yak, now I'm chasing some paddle/rod/tackle box leash's so I don't lose everything overboard.
Can you recommend any one brand in particular or a good place to get them from?

Cheers
SB8

3mm clothes line rope is your friend for paddle leashes. Its what I have always used, it works well. Got two "real" leashes made up with curly elastic stuff, hate them, they rub on my legs or pull on the paddle annoying me.

For other stuff, a lot of people use whipper snipper line, (Just wrap it around a broom handle and drop it in very hot water and let it cool, comes out curly) or old phone cords. These days the only thing I have a cord on is my paddle, dont worry about anything else.

Got to agree with Binder.
I've never used a paddle leash before and I bought one recently. It clunks on the kayak constantly and annoys the hell out of me.
So I don't use it.
I've used VB cord before and it works well.

Be very careful what you choose.  You want something strong enough to hold the gear, but light enough to be able to break if you get hooked up in it.  Pam had an incident recently where she went over and had her anchor rope wrapped around her legs.  It could have got ugly.

Thanks guys, will check out the clothes line option.  I still want to have something on the rod as I've heard plenty of horror stories of them slipping overboard.  It will have to be something small & light though, no boogie board leash that's for sure.  :))

Cheers

SB8 like the others I avoid all the spirals tether arrangements, and just use sash cord on the paddle, and light blind cord on the rods.

Allow at least a metre on the rod tether so you can move it around as you land a fish or other actions without the rod coming up short as you do something else in the yak, when paddling the surplus cord from the rod just lays in the water alongside the yak as you paddle along or under a leg and is totally unobtrusive, see them in the picture on each rod. I have rescued a rod from the water and only saved by the leash after I knocked it overboard

Another way to achieve the same goal without the issues of tethers getting tangled is to use a float on gear like rods, pliers, boga grips etc.

I like to keep chords to a minimum; I'd prefer to lose a rod in a roll over than get tangled & risk losing alot more.....  :OMG

Each to their own....

Cheers,

fitz..

I rarely leash my rods, I use rod holders that have a ring lock on to the rods properly so even up side down they hold them in. Then if things look a bit dodgy I just flip over the ring. Most of the time I dont have the ring on, even went over once with out the ring lock on and the rod stayed in the holder up side down. Wouldn't want to hold my breath it would do it again though! (I've only rolled a yak once in 5 years of paddling, and that was within the first few months). I have come close to loosing rods early on when I was using those stupid berkley quick release rod holders, a good hit on the troll and the rod would literally bounce out of the holder, luckily both times it landed in the yak. Swapped to the ring locks and not had a problem since.

If you just like paddling around estuaries or slow rivers, the risk to rods is minimal, if you like shooting rapids, put a float on it, locking in to a rod holder will just result in a broken rods, ropes or cords will just get you drowned.

Try losing a $500 rod and reel from the back of your kayak, a $20 rod leash makes alot of sense then. It happened to me a few years ago, there is a Pleuger Rod and Daiwa Fuego B/C reel on the bottom of Wivenhoe. I didn't roll my kayak, I was lifting one out reaching behind me the tips tangled and over it went...That was a tough day I have leashed my rods ever since, I had a fish on the weekend just gone, it was a kayak I had just bought and I had forgot to put a leash on, it was a very nervous and careful session.

I say leash them.. you will save some dollars in the event you have a mishap

Thanks for all the feedback guys.  I'm not planning on taking the bling gear on the yak, but in saying that I'd be pissed losing any of my gear overboard.  I'll be searching for something with straight cord on it, no curly/springy stuff.

Cheers

Pam has a Megabass Emelia rod with a Monoblock reel that has had more trips out of the kayak than I can count.  It went down in 20' at Big W and was returned.  It's been in rod holders and the yak has flipped without any damage.  It was even stood on on a gravel bank a couple of weeks ago.  Toughest rod I've ever seen.

Yeah that's a nice stick, very forgiving, feels a bit like a glass blend if I remember correctly.  She's had some good luck with it too, especially after that noggin forgot the silicone in her yak!  ;D
