Reminder: Let the barra be

News release | 29 October, 2012 - Qld Fisheries

Fishers are reminded that barramundi will be off limits in East Coast waters from noon Thursday 1 November until noon 1 February 2013.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district officer Coby Walker said the closure was in place to protect barramundi stock during their vulnerable spawning season.

"These closures allow stocks to replenish to ensure there are healthy fish populations for current and future generations of Queensland anglers," he said.

"A barramundi closure also currently applies for the Gulf of Carpentaria until 1 February 2013.

"Limited barramundi fishing is still permitted in 18 specific lakes and dams.

"Anglers can hook a barra during the closed season by fishing at some Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) dams and other select waterways."

Barramundi can still be taken from and upstream of the following waterways:

    Awoonga Dam
    Belmore Lake
    Burdekin Falls Dam
    Callide Dam
    Corella Lake
    East Leichhardt Dam
    Eungella Dam
    Fairbairn Dam
    Fred Haig (Lake Monduran)
    Julius Lake
    Kinchant Dam
    Koombooloomba Dam
    Lenthalls Dam
    Moondarra Lake
    Peter Faust Dam
    Teemburra Dam
    Tinaroo Dam
    Wuruma Dam.

Size and possession limits still apply to barra taken from these waterways. The minimum size limit is 58cm and the possession limit is one.

Fishing at a SIPS dam means you will be helping to sustain native fish stocks, with 75 per cent of the funds from your permit going back into restocking the dams.
