Murray Cod catch in closed season criticized
By Kerrin Thomas

The President of a local fishing club says allowing even limited numbers of Murray Cod to be taken during the closed season could be detrimental to controlling carp populations.

Changes to recreational fishing rules are proposing anglers be allowed to take one Murray Cod per person during the closed season from recreational impoundments reliant on stocking.

Jeff Rudder, from the Lake Keepit Family Fishing Club, says reducing the bag limit for Murray Cod from two to one, and introducing a catch-and-release requirement over 80cm, is welcome.

But he says he worried the changes will reduce numbers of Murray Cod, which control Carp.

"The greatest past we've got in our waterways is the European Carp, and the number one predator to the carp is the Murray Cod, so the more Cod we've got the better," he said.

"When we're going to target Cod in the breeding season, we're going to affect their numbers, and also decline the carp that they can get rid of as well, especially when they're getting up to 80cms, an 80cm Cod will have no worries at all taking on a European carp."
