Influx of Tandans at NPD.
« on: October 14, 2011, 03:48:55 PM »
There appears to have been an explosion of tandans at North Pine Dam.
In 2 trips this week I have caught 34 on live shrimp. Yesterday I was getting them with the bait 5 feet off the bottom in a couple of locations.
Also finding juveniles around 3 inches long in shrimp traps.
Dont know if it is a result of the floods or just a seasonal thing but I have never caught so many as in the last few months.
See a few others also getting some according to the catch cards.
 Any ideas?
 Cheers
Ray

Are you talking about eel tailed catties ? Are they native to that water or introduced ? I can remember as a kid fishing near Blanchetown on the river Murray,SA and my brother some how "aquired" one (he didn't catch it i know that) but when cooked it was better than the callop (golden perch) that we had been catching. Big cutlet fillets which were real tasty. Does anyone catch them on lures ? Pat.

They are native species I think that the only time that they are caught on lures is if you cast next to their nest.
They are worth $100 per kg live weight in Singapore where they are highly prized and the best part is the lips.

Good effort were you bouncing the fly along the bottom and what fly did you use ? Pat.

Growing up as a kid on Lake Samsonvale before any Bass were stocked, we would target them for a feed, fishing at night with garden worms and prawns. Any Bass we caught was below the wall at Young's Crossing.

They are great eating and probably now that Bass are stocked there, they are more than likely frowned upon as a pest to some degree.

They do take lures after catching a few at Lake Monduran and Lake Wuruma in past trips. As for the population explosion Ray......I have no idea, however the floods of last Summer may have some influence.

Cheers Dave

They put up a good fight, and in the impoundments they do really well. If the bait fishing for bass with the kids is slow, you can usually liven them up by dropping the shrimp to the bottom, wont take long before the kids are struggling with a monster cattie.
