Narrabri Carp Muster

Narrabri will host the 5th Annual Carp Muster on March 3 and 4 and fishers are invited to come bait a line and try their luck at catching a carp, racing a yabby or trying their hand at the ever popular casting competition.

NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) Fisheries Conservation Manager, Milly Hobson said the weekend was great chance to let people know what else they can do to help bring back native fish, while also going into the running to win a fantastic range of prizes.

“The weekend is a fun way for the community to learn more about the impact of carp on native fish and how planting trees, removing willows and re-snagging the water can benefit native fish,” Ms Hobson said.

“Prizes up for grabs include a 10 foot tinny and motor, kayak, and fishing and camping gear, which have once again been provided by our major sponsor Boggabri Coal.

“Every carp caught and weighed will give anglers more chances of going in the draw to take home a prize, with category winners including the biggest carp caught, and mystery prizes for both junior and senior categories.

“Even if you don’t manage to catch a carp you will still be in the draw to win a prize and receive plenty of give-aways.

“There will be a free BBQ again this year and plenty of fun to be had so bring along family and friends and make a day or a weekend of it.”

Carp are currently listed as a Class 3 noxious fish in NSW and have had a significant impact on the health of our waterways and native fish populations.

Ms Hobson said the Carp Muster forms an integral part of the Namoi Demonstration Reach, a joint project between NSW DPI, Murray-Darling Basin Authority and Namoi Catchment Management Authority, which aims to bring back native fish to the Namoi by improving aquatic and riparian habitat.

“Previous carp musters have resulted in over a thousand competitors flocking to the banks of the Namoi River and tonnes of carp being removed from the waterway.  We had over 500 people register last year, our most successful event so far,” Ms Hobson said.

Registration for the Namoi Carp Muster will be held at the Crossing Theatre, Narrabri in the Auditorium on Saturday March 3 from 8am to 5pm, and Sunday March 4 from 8am to 12 noon. The cost is $2 for children and pensioners, and $5 for adults.

All entrants are required to abide by the current NSW Fishing Rules and Regulations.

Joint hosts, the Narrabri Amateur Fishing Club will donate 50% of funds raised from registration on the weekend to the Friendly Faces Helping Hands Foundation, a local charity based in Narrabri. Individual donations can also be made over the weekend for this great cause.
