Fishing comp to go ahead despite blue-green algae warning

The organisers of a major fishing competition at Mount Isa will meet the city's water board today to discuss high levels of blue-green algae in Lake Moondarra.

The board has issued a high algae alert for the site of the annual competition, which is to be held later this month.

The event co-manager, Lyn Holmes-Kidd, says people could suffer skin irritations and gastrointestinal problems from the water.

She says it is unclear at this stage if any events associated with the fishing classic will have to be cancelled.

"Event managers myself and Jess will be meeting with the water board to discuss the implications that it could have on the fishing classic but at this stage there are no changes," she said.

"We just wanted to obviously have all our competitors and people doing the classic to be safe and just to be aware of the alerts that the water board have put out and if people chose not to swim then that's fine but we just want people to be safe."
