New boat ramp for Chaffey Dam

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson today announced that a temporary boat ramp has been built for boaties at Chaffey Dam.

Mr Anderson said that the low dam level was proving difficult for recreational water users to launch their boats.

“I had received a number calls from people in the community expressing their concern about the difficulty in launching and retrieving their boats at Chaffey Dam.

“The two main water sport destinations in our area are Lake Keepit and Chaffey Dam, and while Lake Keepit is still accessible, Chaffey Dam has become increasingly difficult for water sports boats to enter.

“The low level of water meant that cars and trailers were getting bogged and damaged as they tried to launch, but this new temporary ramp provides easy access and safe access for boats to be launched and retrieved.

“This time of year is busy for lakes and dams, with many people making their way to our beautiful waterways for the Christmas break, so they can now head to Chaffey Dam knowing that they can enjoy the full range of water sports over the summer period.

“I would like to thank John Holland Constructions and Water NSW for making the boat ramp a possibility.” Mr Anderson concluded.

The ramp consists of 10 flexible mats made of concrete blocks held together with steel pins.

Water NSW project manager Jubrahil Khan said the portable ramp was designed to be moved to accommodate the water level of the dam.

“As part of the augmentation we are required to relocate some recreational facilities to account for the new full supply level of the augmented dam,” Mr Khan said.

“The temporary boat ramp provides a solution that can continue to be used by the community even when the water level of the dam changes.”

Work on the project continues to stream ahead with traffic now using the temporary diversion road to allow construction on the new Bowling Alley Point bridge and road work.

The $50 million project is comprised of the $18.03 million NSW Government funded dam safety upgrade component as well as $31.381 million for augmentation including $18.145 million from the Australian Government’s National Water Security Plan for Cities and Towns, $9.668 million from the NSW Government and $3.968 from Tamworth Regional Council.
