Get fishing in Gundy for final 2013 Carp Buster

The banks of Goondiwindi’s MacIntyre River will be slapping with carp next weekend as anglers get their last fix of ‘Carp Buster’ fishing for the year.
To be hosted on October 26 and 27 by the Goondiwindi Fishing Club and the Queensland Murray- Darling Committee (QMDC), the weekend-long competition is expected to prove popular among locals, visitors and families, with great prizes on offer.
Goondiwindi Fishing Club President John Billsborough said he was looking forward to the weekend which had been moved from its traditional date in April to October for the first time.
“We have loads of prizes on offer and encourage people to register early at the registration tent on the AFL grounds near Riddles Oval,” Mr Billsborough said.
“Final weigh in is at 11am on Sunday, with prizes to be awarded afterwards. People are reminded to purchase a fishing licence for NSW if they are going to fish south of the river. These can be purchased from Gundy Sports Centre on Marshall St.”
Registration kicks off from 5pm – 8pm on Friday, October 25, at the Queensland Hotel on Marshall St, then from 7am at the AFL grounds. Registration costs $15 for seniors and $5 for juniors.
QMDC Biodiversity Technical Officer Pippa Bagshaw said that the Gundy event was the fifth in the eight-event series, with further events to be held in the first half of 2014.
“The Carp Buster fishing series is a great way for people to learn about carp while having fun,” Ms Bagshaw said.
“Carp or Euro’s as they are also known are the most widely distributed fish in the world, and lay millions of eggs each year. They compete with native species for food and habitat and impact on water quality.
“The more people who know about the fish, the better equipped we are as a community to tackle this pest.
“With $3500 on offer across the Carp Busters series and loads more prizes in the Gundy event, there has never been a better time to throw in a line,” she said.
