Help Please – Fishing the Dawson at Theodore
« on: June 24, 2012, 07:37:44 AM »
Hi All,

After reading about Theodore and the Dawson River in a recent edition of QFM and seeing more information on Sweetwater and Facebook , I’ve got the Toga bug again. So I’m looking at heading out there next week for a few days weather permitting (not raining, colds is okay).

What are the chances of catching Toga in the middle of winter?  I’ve only ever fished and caught Toga in Cania. I have a relatively small collection of Bass / Toga lures (compared to my barra gear),but have a reasonable  range of the usual stuff from surface to deep. Ie  poppers, zippy zigs, bills bugs, floating, suspending and siking hard bodies, soft plastics, spinner baits etc

Having never been to Theodore I’m assuming it has a concrete ramp from Fitzy’s location page, could anyone confirm? Unfortunately, I have a low-slung sedan and it’s limited to the black top and concrete ramps, it gets bogged on wet grass…..

Planning to swag it at Junction Park and dine at the Theodore Hotel

If you have any tips or tricks, I’m all ears. Is there a better place to chase toga considering I’m based in Gladstone.

Will post photos and report when I get back.

 :thanks
Earl

The ramp is concrete, rough and a bit of a weird angle, but should not offer you any trouble in a normal car. (As long as the water level is not to low). Watch out for the posts they put on the corners if the water level is high, the ramp goes in to the water at about a 45 degree angle. Only problem you would have would be if it got more thna 10mm of train, the dirt track down to the ramp might get to slippery.
I've watched Toga cruising their territory from the back landing of my donga out the back of the pub when camped there for 6 months. Didn't have a yak or boat, tried a bit of bank fishing for no go. Toga just swim around the lures. I'd say they get a fair flogging in the town reach. Head upstream and you should stand a chance.

Like most inland waterways they fish best after a flow, but the locals give them a good flogging in the weeks afterwards, making fishing a bit tough for any thing that is considered eatable until the next flow.

Fitzy took me to his secret 'toga spot on the Dawson a few years ago.  Blind folded from the Crackow Pub so I'd never be able to find it on my own.
Bloody place was so secret even the 'toga hadn't heard of it................

Thanks Binder and Dale,

Plan was to head as far as possible upstream on the electric to find the least explored/pressure spots.  Hopefully the light showers we’ve had over the last few days there might be some inflows.

Dale with my nose for finding secret spots and skills or lack thereof I should be able to find Fizty gun Toga spot.

Had a look through my records and it’s been 14 months since a toga has grace the deck of the boat, hence the itchy feet and thumb

Thanks
Earl

Last 2 toga that graced the deck of my boat and the first for the old man.

Only time I'd skunked there since my first trip there as a teenager...........

Shooting some video for a doco once (which has never been shown), I boated 17 toga in about an hour one arvo before dark. Wait to see a crusing fish then land a fly on its nose. Got to go find who has got that footage, some good fish on that......

Nice toga Kev,

FREE TRIP – if anyone’s interested the decky pulled the pin last light so I have a spare spot in the boat.

Will be heading to Theordore on Thursday afternoon, should arrive around 3pm ish.  Will swag it at Junction Park, dine at the Theodore Hotel at night, local café for brunch and planning to head home (Gladstone) Sunday morning or late Saturday night subject to the fishing

Hi Earl,
The Qld Fishing Monthly May edition has a story on the Dawson and Theodore if you can get hold of it, if not let me know and I will see if I can copy it for you. Will send you my email in case you need to contact me.
