Professional Eelers Ewan Maddock and Baroon Pocket.
« on: February 16, 2015, 03:40:17 PM »
I heard that there is a move to allow professional eelers on Ewan Maddock and Baroon Pocket. I sent an email to SEQ water and they said that DPI are looking at it but had no further info.
Anyone heard anything about it.
Do not think that they would affect the fishing but a bit concerned that it could be the start of other things also being allowed.
Have a vague memory of SEQ water blaming the eelers for the spread of cabomba from Mcdonald to Ewan maddock on one of their noxious weeds workshops.
Anyone else heard anything?
Cheers
Ray

There was a questionnaire sent out to stocking groups back in December asking for input.  I think DAFF were asking the questions.  There are all sorts of issues attached to eelers or any professionals operating in the Sweetwater.  Hopefully your group opposed it Ray.

Was discussed on January 21st by SWFSA.  SEQWater dams being considered are:
Leslie Harrison
Atkinson
Ewen Maddock
Somerset
Wivenhoe
Wyaralong
Six Mile Creek
Moogerah
Maroon
Borumba

and SunWater dams are:
Bjelke Petersen
Boondooma
Fred Haigh
Eungella
Burdekin Falls
Peter Faust
Tinaroo.

Commercial Eel fishers would only have access to SEQWater impoundments via public boat ramps, only on weekdays and only between 6am and 6pm.  There are strict gear checking, gear storage and equipment washdown requirements in place that will mitigate weed transfer between impoundments.
With SunWater, again, public boat ramps only on weekdays.

You need to know the history, and the rules before making that call Beau.  It had been tried before, and when the eels got a bit short on supply the eeler then decided he should be permitted to target other fin fish, which included stocked fish paid for by the recreational anglers.  I believe it ended up in court.  Once DAFF allow a commercial fishery, they must try to maintain it so that the commercial operator can continue to make a living.  (This is the Primary Production side of their duties.)  So, if DAFF authorised commercial targeting of Tilapia, as some have suggested, and that targeting is successful and wipes out Tilapia, guess what?  DAFF may need to stock them again so the pro can keep selling them.  There really in no place for any commercial fishing operators in Queensland's fresh water, and especially in Stocked Impoundments maintained by voluntary groups using recreational anglers' money.

Fully understand that dale but if it's kept to eels only well then yes, BUT if it's turned to other finned fish then it's a deffinet NO .  I would like to see there  regulations before  making a final call on it though.

I say no commercial fishing in Sweetwater period.

To allow it would set dangerous precedence, AND its the thin edge of the wedge. The commercial sector keep probing from different angles to get a foot back in the door to non-tidal waters, and will keep doing so. We need a united front to say ABSOLUTELY NOT each and every time they try. If we hadn't done so in the past we would already see netters vying for catfish, carp, tilapia in existing lakes with all the bycatch of bass, cod, perch, barra, sooties etc that goes with it. AND without a doubt there would then be the temptation to quietly slip a few ferals into other waterways so netters can increase profits and claim to be "helping the environment". (Same tactic is used by cattle growers to justify running cattle in creek beds to keep the paragrass under control. The same paragrass that was imported as cattle feed and allowed to go feral in the fist place)
Recreational anglers and (non-target fish) would be the losers if commercial fishing was allowed in non-tidal waters. Then there would be applications to keep a percentage of non target fish "why waste the by-catch".

Finally, just like happens on the beaches, imagine if you're anchored up on a school of bass and a commercial boat comes up and drops an eel trap or wants to run a net next to you. YOU would have to move and give them 50m buffer zone even tho you were there first. What a load of horse cr@p.... ,!!!!  :walkplank

Commercial fishing in Sweetwater stinks to high heaven.

Just realised, North Pine isn't on the list so PRFMA wouldn't be advised.

Ah that would be the chosen few who once seemed to make all the decisions regarding Leslie Harrison......  :-X

They got their revenge on LNP for daring to mention anyone else might dare use that lake other than themselves.

No chance in impoundments with lungfish, let 20 odd out of the floating cod end of an eel trap once.

 Belated  response from SEQ water,
 Good morning Ray

Apologies for the delay in responding to your enquiry.

I can advise that the state government Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (formally DAFF) is overseeing and administering  the commercial eel fishing trial.

Although Seqwater sites have been approved for use we are not aware at this time of the progress of the trial.

Your enquiry will need to be directed to that department but unfortunately I cannot assist with this as  I do not have contact details for a specific DAF officer.

Cheers
Ray
