Hi all,
What is the recommendation for a water resistant head harness light with seperate battery pack - ie a powerful one that is going to let me see a good 80-100m at night on the water (always so much harder than seeing on land). I know of brands such as Led Lenser and Zebralight, but not sure what the best value is.
Cheers

I'd look at a Petzl Duo 5 Waterproof, definitely not the cheapest but arguably the best. Can option it up to a rechargeable battery too.

He have look at http://www.ayup-lights.com/ (http://www.ayup-lights.com/)
There's at least four of us sweetwater members using their head torches now. Coloured filters to keep the bugs away click on the end of each lens. I have had mine since 2010 and it's still going strong.
They are a Brisbane company too.

Thanks gents, yep a mate of mine uses the Ay Up and I have seen them on the water - awesome!

I couldnt bring myself to spend $231 plus shipping as good as those lights are - if I did MTB or cross country running etc I could justify it but not for just yaking and camping (although I have 2 good Petzl Zipka's for that). So...I went elcheapo and we will see how long it lasts. It is advertised as a million lume or so but in reality it will be about 800 lume (3 x Cree XML):

I will report back so anyone interested can get a bit of a review.
Thanks again for your help.

Ok - so I decided that the cheap batteries that come with the unit and the charger might be iffy and being lithium iron I dont want the gassing out at the back of my head, so I went with a Nitecore D4 charger (I need a good charger for AAA and AA etc anyway) and 2 Panasonic protected 18650 3400mah batteries...so given that the usual batteries that come with these cheap lights dont get anything like the grunt they need to run the LED's properly, Im thinking it should really fire well with this set up. If the light fails prematurely, then the charger and good cells will later go into say a Fenix or similiar that takes the same batteries.

If you run normal batteries you'll get the full 1.5 volts instead of the 1.2 volts in rechargeables.

sorry mate - which battery types are you talking about? I think you mean the little ones - AAA etc. The 18650 are 3.7 volts and I was not aware that they come in non-rechargable jobbies.
cheers

Ok, I was referring to AAA and AA size.
