From the Fishers Mouth
14th February 2011

The adage “you should have been here last week” is muttered by those lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time. It is universal amongst fishermen whether you are a novice angler or a professional that you hear about great fishing and by the time you arrive at the red hot location things have cooled off.

Fish and their habits are impacted by so many factors that five minutes can be a long time, let alone a day or a week. Changing water levels, water quality, temperature, weather patterns, boat traffic and even moon phases, are all factors that impact fish behaviour and ultimately whether or not they will bite.

Fishermen cannot help but enquire about “how the fish are biting”. The information that passes between two parties is irrelevant at times, because by the time a fishermen who has just been returned home tells his story to someone who is about to go fishing, anything could have happened.

Unless I get first-hand information from a reliable source that is either still on the water or in the car on the way home, most fishing reports are interesting, but in reality are already old.

Locations to fish are best selected by ascertaining water levels, water clarity and weather patterns. I like to fish areas where the water has been reasonably stable for a period of time. Stability in the water can also mean that clarity is good. If you have flexibility in when you can fish, mid-week is ideal as there is less traffic on the water and you can select days when the weather is better.

Reports from other anglers are still taken into consideration, especially if large numbers of fish are being caught over a long period of time, but I am usually interested in water quality.

Most fishing trips are planned well in advance with holidays, accommodation and a host of other factors not allowing any flexibility. In this instance, be ready to adapt to whatever fishing opportunities may arise. Be prepared with a range of equipment to allow fishing for any species that resides in the chosen destination.

For an active day on the water, Blowering’s redfin have been biting freely. Soft plastics, jackall’s and small hard body lures such as the AC Slim Invader have been working for me with early morning and late afternoon being the best times to fish.
