Heading down to Sundown National Park this weekend to do a bit of rock hopping & hopefully pull a cod or two. The nights should be starting to get a bit cool down there, will have to make sure I have plenty of firewood & rum. Hopefully post some pics of fish when I get back. Anybody keen to drop down for a fish I will be there from Thursday till Sunday.

Well what a top weekend with my boy, good weather, good fishing & great company. Got down to the camping ground at Burrows waterhole about lunch time & set up camp. Put the kayak in & paddled up to the head of the waterhole & started working my way back down the hole casting a fluro yellow spinnerbait in towards the undercut bank on the deep side of the hole, after only about a dozen casts I was rewarded with a solid strike & a short run before a nice little cod came to the side of the yak. I towed the fish in the water back to the camp site because I had forgotten the camera, after a couple of shots the fish was released back from where it was caught, A short time later another fish slightly larger was caught & released in the same area. By this time it was starting to get dark & time for the campfire to be lit & a nice pre prepared curry to be put on.
The next day we decided to head upriver & explore some areas that we had not been before, walking the riverbanks in this country is pretty hard work with lots of sharp unstable rocks & plenty of spiky Lamandra. The other hazard in this country that gets the heart racing is the large number of deer that leap out of hiding spots as you walk past. Only one fish was caught on this walk but it was special as it was Dan's first Cod & he is still smiling. This Cod was caught on a Garra Lure Tarki in orange & yellow. That arvo I picked up a nice yella from the kayak which we contemplated eating but decided to release it & go with another good curry.After dinner Daniel wanted to try somesurface fishing, after only a couple of casts a large explosion of water was heard & my first surface cod was on, once the heart settled down it was a short fight before the largest Cod of the weekend (about 600mm) was brought to the bank. Unfortunately as i removed the hooks he gave a big flip & dissapeared into the dark before I could get a photo. Dan decided to sleep in the ute that night due to the freight train that kept him awake the night before, not sure what he was on about as I did not hear a thing.
Up early this morning for a feed of bacon & eggs & then headed down river for another big walk, headed down past Rats Castle waterhole & onto the Turtle hole, lots of good looking water but alas no fish on this trip, had a few nice swims while recovering lures. Another quick trip out in the yak just before dark saw another Yella come to the boat, unfortunately this was the last fish for the trip.
Another great trip with my son & already looking foward to the next trip away.

Glad you had a good trip and way to rub it in ! That water looks amazing... Just as well i stayed home tho bad news on the home front ....
Maybe it was a wise choice after all with yours sons attitude to trains and all ;D

Good report Andrew. I've had a few good trips into Sundown over the years, and like you have noticed the occasional deer. In fact we were woken up one night camped at Burrows when a mob of deer crossed the river. I haven't fished the place yet but have had some good reports of fish down past Rat's Castle. The track in has yet to improve I suppose.

Hi takrat, mate the deer are in plague proportions, would love to be allowed in there to do some culling. The road in is not too bad, still 4wd territory, but not difficult. The track from Burrows down stream gets a bit more interesting.

Andrew, last time I was in there I had a chat with the ranger. He told be that he normally does do a fair bit of culling in the park but he only walks along the river from the southern end. The hills are also stiff with bloody goats. In the Flinders some time back they let selected hunters in to clean out the goats and it worked. Mybe that's what's needed there eh.
