A bit of a win
« on: May 06, 2011, 06:40:47 AM »
Sort of not worthy of the fish restocking board but decided to do a check up on some fish i stocked in a dam 16 months (location witheld) ago doubting any would be left but to my suprise this little spinnerbait had a hell of a hard day at work!

Just one of a few caught and released. The food chain i established before releasing the fingerlings and are still large numbers of rainbows, gudgeons and water snails present.

Pretty proud moment, they look like they have done well.

Fitz, pre stocking i put in shrimp and rainbows along with the gudgeons already there, Then released bass and golden perch same quantity of both.

Just a few pics for comparison of growth rate as they where released on the same hour on the same day.

Cheers

Oh if only ... This dam and the one that overflows into it from way up the paddock have no water edge cover no reeds only straight forward farm dams, Although the standing timber and the abundant yabby's in the larger dam further up scream cod but is just not fiesable stocking cod.

Once i have my own place i may have a play with some earth movers and create a system of toga dams.

Steve would you have any other ideas or suggestions for the other larger dam or another dam i have to stock?
Approx size of the dam with standing timber is 115m long by 80m wide deepest part is around 1o to 13 feet.

The second dam i will stock has only just been dug so a good establishment will have to take place first, This dam is around the same size with no timber at all... should i be putting a few large pipes in and around to create small habbitats for baitfish and shrimp ?

This has really got me thinking.....
Thanks for the kind words.

P.S

The dam these yellowbelly and bass have been coming out of is mearly 80m x 60m wide average depth of 4 to 8 feet. Still alive with amazing schools or rainbows and gudgeons.

Steve,
Dont worry about the lack of macrophytes or plants on the edge, while not ideal IMHO lots of Toga (and other species of Scleropages overseas) are bred in ponds/dams with bare banks.
If the rainbows are breeding there must be something in there for them to deposit their eggs on.
At 4 to 8 feet if you introduce any native macrophytes they will pretty much take over the whole dam, you could still plant some native sedges etc on the edge though.
No real reason why you can not stock a few Mary's in the other dam as long as there is enough food.
What catchement are you on ?

cheers
Steve.

Its an Albert river catchment, I was scepticle about golden perch here but maroon dam is stocked with them and the loagn and alber river join anyway so i was told it was ok. Mind you it would take a flood of some proportion to wash anything down the road over a hill and to the river.

I know of mary river cod in the albert i know where they are and they cop a hiding by the locals grr..

This saratoga idea has me wondering still and pndering the potential.

What is the availability of MRC i thought there was only one licenced hatchery producing them ?

I wouldnt be sure how well toga would take to these dams either but hinze dam is literally only 2 small ranges away.
