Title: Boating Permits to go on Somerset & Wivenhoe Dams
Post by: Sweetwater on August 01, 2016, 03:59:40 PM
In a bonus for boaties, the Palaszczuk Government today announced that Seqwater would phase out boating permits for Wivenhoe and Somerset dams by 1 July 2017.

Energy and Water Supply Minister Mark Bailey said he was pleased to announce the phasing out of the permits as a measure to cut red tape, lower costs to the community and provide an additional incentive for the community to enjoy both lakes.

“Over the next year, the annual boating permit fee of $100 will be reduced on a pro rata basis, calculated on the number of months remaining until the scheme concludes.

“Until that date, boaties with vessels registered by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads or that would normally be transported on a trailer due to size, will still need a Seqwater boating permit to access either lake.

“By removing this financial barrier, we hope it encourages more people to visit and enjoy lakes Somerset and Wivenhoe.”

Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Peter Dennis said this was just another example of Seqwater simplifying its systems and making recreation accessible to more people.

“Discontinuing boating permits which only operated at two of our many boating lakes will provide a more consistent approach to boating access across all of our lakes where boating is permitted.’’

Current permits will remain applicable until they expire. Pro rata yearly and weekly permits will remain on sale until 30 June 2017.

Boating permits can be purchased at a number of locations. For more information visit the Boating page at seqwater.com.au

Boating permits are not required for kayaks, canoes and similar paddlecraft.

Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports and Minister for Energy, Biofuels and Water Supply
The Honourable Mark Bailey

So, what about NPD? You still get hit there I believe. Even if you're on your kayak!

The difference between Somerset/Wivenhoe permits and NPD permits is that the monies for Somerset/Wivenhoe permits goes straight into SEQ water coffers and  permits and monies for the Boating Access scheme at NPD all the monies go into fingerlings.
SEQ water have given PRFMA permission to continue operation the BAS for another year as they have still not completed their review.
Who knows what the future holds?
For those who may be interested the dam is really firing at the moment with over 280 bass caught between 2 boats on Friday and today. Both bait and lures.
New permit season commences 1/9/16

Not directed at you Ray but the figures dont add up. Are you sure the BAS money was spent on fingerlings last year ?

by the constitution the only way the monies can be spent is on stocking ,running costs of the group such as the maintenance of the site and insurance.  Each year A small percentage is held in reserve  in case of contingency such as an extended drought .
All expenditure has to be brought to the general meeting for approval and then vetted by the auditor at the end of the financial year.
I would assume that this would be standard procedure of all stocking groups.

The reason why NPD fishes so well is the fact that no one goes there, I doubt that is would get the boat traffic of Wivenhoe or Somerset. Its too difficult and too costly for the average fisherman to access NPD. The double dip permit system is seen to be just that.

I wonder if the new SIP allocation system will take the NPD situation into account?  Should they get an equal share of the SIP funds when they have another, more lucrative stream of income?  It would scream of preferential treatment by SEQWater if they enforce that all people accessing their water have to pay a third party to do so.  I really couldn't see any trespass charges by SEQWater holding up in court under the current system.

So to access  too costly when its only 10 dollars dearer than a somerset/wivenhoe permit.?
How is it more difficult to access?
Do you need a 4 lane highway?
Should other stocking groups also have their Sip funds reduced because they run a sausage sizzle?
The only reason this fishery exists is because of the hard work and dedication of the founding members ,local polies 'sweetwater members, and Petrie Council.
The rules and regulations re access are a carry over from the original deed of access granted by the previous Petrie Shire .
The general public have enjoyed the efforts of the PRFMA 's stocking for years at no cost.
The whole future of all access to the dam is up in the air until the QMRA review is completed and only then will any decisions be made by SEQ water.
The only thing for certain is that there never ever be access to swimming and kayaking from the public access areas at Bullockies Rest and other areas near to the dam wall so whatever happens it will take a while for any proposed changes to take effect as infrastructure and toilets etc will have to be provided.
