Surface luring for bass
« on: September 28, 2011, 10:44:15 PM »
One of my favourite fishing types of fishing is topwater and as summer approaches the insects come out to play; the bass love it.

I prefer bloopers like skitter pops, but just went through the bass popper box and I've got most bases covered; bloopers, fizzers, paddlers, sticks/dogs a couple of buzzbaits there.

What are your favorite surface lures for bass?

Pic 1- River 2 Sea 65mm Bubble Pop
Pic 2- Rapala Skitter pop
Pic 3- Surface strikes = sensory overload; the sight & sound.....

After last weekends effort when no other lure would work, the Heddon Zara Puppy in the Black Shore Minnow colour seemed to do the damage which I'm addicted to using over other surface lures, however I have had great success on River 2 Sea Buggi Pop's and Cicada Pop's along with Heddon Tiny Torpedo's.

First lure I ever caught a bass on is still my go to popper.
A $5 Berkley frenzy with the sparkly sliver belly. (Belly colour is the only colour a fish sees on a surface lure )
Had not seen them for years and I spotted another 2 of them in the rays outdoors sale a month or so ago, snavelled them and hid them in the cupboard!

Generally I use poppers, when I get tired I will swap to a fizzer or a walker for a break (just a slow wind is all that is needed), but I love surface fishing. Problem is getting access to the water with SEQ water getting serious about start and finish times in summer on my locals.

I haven't really had a chance to try many surface lures for bass, for any luck anyhow. How do you work a popper for them? Fast or slow?

Plenty of pauses with a popper.  Long pauses.

It's interesting to see a lot of preferences for a popper / blooper style of lures ...... just about everyone that I have fished with pulls out a popper.     Personally I like the stick baits  & quite big ones ...... 85 Lucky Craft Sammy being my go to  followed by a 65 . Others are the Jackall water mocassin  & the Cultiva zippin ziggy.

Fishing in the river with 4lb Fireline I prefer just about anything out of the $3.95 specials bin.  There are some pretty big Bass in the river this year.  With the number of fish around since the flood they're not too fussy.

I have actually found that trout flies tied in sizes around 6-10 are extremely effective, even on larger fish. The strikes generally are not as aggressive but the results can be spectacular.

Fitzy, you're right mate. Surface is the way to go, anyone who doesn't get a rush out of a surface hit has got no blood in their veins! I like Bubble pops, Halco Night Walkers, Water moccasins, and of course those black things that waddle across the surface.
Cheers,
JD

I have had a bit of luck on px45s/scumdogs. I need to restock my popper collection to some nasty tailor/trev action we had one night in mooloolah river.  Good to see some favorites off others so I know what to restock with :P. I am always a fan of bubble pop so will get a couple 65mm ones I think.

Atomic hardz in the shallow, cast to spot and if its not taken right away, lift the rod to bring the lure to surface then retrieve like you would a paddler, seems to get them in. Works in small creeks.

Last week down in the GC hinterland I found the creeks were all weeded up with only about 10cm of water above the weeds, so I put on a 1/8th s/bait cast as far as I could and high sticked the rod and they popped up out of the weeds and grabed it.

Surface = Drool!

I just wish I had the patience to persist!! Nothing better than those surface strikes though.

For me anything with a prop on the front is always fun followed by bloopers or cupface poppers.  Pretty keen to add Soft bodied frogs to that list after picking one up at the convention from the Charltons store.

Cheers
Colin
