My Unicorn

Keep reading about these unicorn bass everyone chases ;)

Back when I was just getting into bass fishing, there was a competition running called Bassin Qld Series..

I thought it would be a good comp to try out and entered a round that was at Somerset Dam.

Had no real idea what I was doing, only ever had caught one bass previously at Moogerah dam. Had a box of Jackall lures and 2 rods, was fishing out of a tinny with a 30hp on the back, no electric.

Comp ran 3 rounds over the weekend, 2 on saturday and 1 on sunday. 1st round started 6am and we are all off. I headed to Pelican Point and started straight jigging a Jackall rattler on the bottom 30feet down.

2 minutes in it got smashed...and I mean smashed! I was using 6lb fireline, fishing on my own, reel screaming regardless of how much drag I put on it. Long story short, 20 minutes later I got this fish to the boat.

A bass! I was on the books! As this was a weigh-in competition I had to keep this sucker alive until 11am close of this session. I had a 60ltr ice box with a recirculating pump as my livewell. Hastely filled with buckets of water and 1 big bass. This fish couldn't turn around in the icebox I kid you not lol!

Anyway, tried to keep fishing but I was getting worried about the health of the fish.

8:30am I decide enough is enough...I run back up the dam to find one of the competition organisers (Dave Hislop) and tell him I want to weigh in for the round.

He kindly helps me out with the fish...weighed in on the scales at 3.2kilos! We did put a tape on it, 62.3cm. That 1 fish had me in 3rd place after the 2 saturday rounds. Ended up 7th overall after the weekend as I couldn't catch another one lol!

Got some great prizes, my only regret now is that I didn't get a photo of the fish on the measure...I did get one of me holding the beast tho :)

So that's my unicorn...they are out there...
