Title: Lake Callemondah and Upper Boyne (Peaks Crossing)
Post by: fishfolk on January 12, 2012, 02:32:00 PM
Just a quick story aboout these two places around Gladstone - As part of Gladstone Harbour Fish Health issue, 'work'  (I know Fitzy will question the word 'work'...) was carried out of the freshwater section of these two systems, so I will just offer some facts and figures...

Callemondah (if you live around Gladstone and you don't know or haven't fished this little system....you are missing out)

Electrofishing 20 mins fishing - 20 barra caught and tagged - Length 480mm-1059mm & Weight 1128gr-16300gr (all fish excellent heath)

Plus plenty of bonies, fork-tail catties, long-finned eels and ambassids

Sorry no photos..

Upper Boyne (Manns Weir to Awoonga Dam wall)

Electrofish - a lot !!!! - 564 barra caught and tagged - Length 346mm - 1130mm Weight 490gr - 16100gr

Total population estimates - 3100 (+/- 250) barramundi

plus forkies, tandanus, spangled, banded grunter, bonies, longtom, rainbows (several species), flathead (yes, flathead), bream (yes, bream), tarpon, freshwater mullet, frshwater garfish, sooties (2 very big and fat ones)

All fish in excellent health (couple with dam wall scars still... which was expected) and every fish tagged.

If you plan to fish these two little delights - respect them for what they are, be curteous of the landholders and take your rubbish with you

Happy fishing !!!

Great info SP, thanks for posting.  :thumbsup

Manns Weir? Is that up around Ubobo way?
Very noteworthy on those couple of Sooties you quietly slid in there..... it bodes of days to come, as an effect of days gone by......  ;)

Also, do you have any survey results from the Calliope River? Been wondering about JPs in the upper end for some time. Did some hiking well upstream of the tidal stuff towards Catfish Creek. Can't see why there should be some remnants there. Lots of bream and tarpon up there.

As for work, crack the whip on Cheeto will you? He seems to be enjoying it waaaaay to much.  ;)

Cheers,

fitz..

hi fitzy,

our lease pond site backs onto catfish, and have not yet found any (both spotlight and fishing) after some sightins and reports.  i have another lead to follow, will get up further this weekend, and have a look.

cheers

Be keen to be kept in the loop either way Kurt. Gut feeling tells me there's some there. Everything looks good for them to be there, only prob is possibly that unofficial / illegal barrier a bit up of the old crossing. Have you seen any gravel extraction along the upper reaches? That'll kill em off / chase them out every time.

Was up that way recently, due to the closed season did not fish the Boyne. Staggered at the number of people targeting them in closed season.
