Title: O'Sheas Crossing ? Lake Wivenhoe
Post by: brno465 on April 24, 2012, 06:38:14 AM
Mornin' Everyone
My stepdaughter has just brought herself a Mantra Noa, and wants to go somewhere with us to try it out.
She's not keen on a big dam or deep water just yet, so we were thinking maybe the river at O'sheas.
We've fished off the bank there a few times, biggest thing we've caught was a tilapia, so I was just looking for some info.
What's the best bet for a bass, up the river or down towards Wivenhoe ?
Is it worth heading there for a fish, not too much info around about that stretch of the river ?

Any info greatly appreciated

Tim

Not alot of fish seem to get caught up the top of Wivenhoe, well the Brisbane arm anyways. There's a stack of fish up the Stanley arm below Somerset. You can launch next to the tennis courts in Somerset township & park in the tennis court carpark to get your car off the road.

Thanks Fitzy, we might give that a try.
Is it a steep bank or an easy launch near the tennis courts ?
No one's gonna get cranky if we leave a couple of cars there ?  ;D

Tim

why dont you head to your local at Cressy?

All good fishing is on the edges anyway and there is always a quite area somewhere on the dam. I know its a dam but recon she will be fine mate there.

Hi Steve
We went down to Cressy the day after it re-opened, went everywhere that used to be good (hadn't been there for a while) and got one touch on a spinnerbait all day. No one else I talked to had had any luck either .....
Thought we'd try somewhere different, and have only ever fished O'sheas from the bank.

If it was only Jo and I, we'd be back down to the Bremmer, but we're not sure how long the stepdaughter will last paddling on her own, when so far she's only sat in the front seat of our Hobie and peddaled.
At least O'sheas has a nice picnic area for her to wait at if she gets sick of it early  ;D
She's just as likely to decide she only wants to drive as far as Cooby Dam in the morning anyway  ::)  ;D

All good mate. Council have approved exactly what I described above. Just park the car in the carpark & all is good. The locals don't like alot of cars on the street (or grass) as the streets are very narrow there.

It's not manicured lawns down to the water, but its about the best spot along that lower Stanley River for launching. Nothing like Heart Attack Hill at Wivenhoe Pocket.

Cheers,

fitz..

Thanks for the info Fitzy, but we ended up at Oshea's for the day.
My main reason for the day out was so my stepdaughter (Tenielle) could try out her new Mantra Noa, and it was a good spot for that.

As far as fish go, we manged two 30cm-ish bass, Jo caught a yellowbelly at about 34cm, Tenielle caught a tilapia, and a bunch of catfish.
All except the forktails were caught under the bridge, the bass were both as I was dragging a hard minnow right up against the pylons.

After we left the bridge to explore the river a bit, all we caught were the forktails, some decent fighters though so the girls were happy enough catching them.

The Noa got a big thumbs up, and it looks like we will have to sneak out of the house now if we want to fish without her.  ;D

G'Day Tim n Jo,

Great to see you getting the girl out fishing & even getter you caught some fish. I must admit I was a bit doubtful of you'd catch any stocked fish there, just don't seem to be alot caught there, but maybe thats because not many fish there.....

In saying that, fish we've stocked into Wivenhoe can & do go upstream past Linville so there's no reason you shouldn't get them there.

BTW- Its a nice paddle from Scrub Creek Road down to Fulham Rd. Just a bit shallow and one small portage just down from Scrub Creek, the rest is very nice with some fishy looking water. Zoom in on the map below to see where the bridges are.

Well done.
