Title: Whats between Somerset and Wivanhoe?
Post by: Binder on May 19, 2013, 06:55:04 AM
Hear lots of stories about people shooting the fish in the barrel below Wivanhoe, but what sort of water is above Wivanhoe before Somerset, hear the odd story around a couple of the crossings. buts thats about it. Its it water all the way or does it break down in to water holes? How is the access?

Wivenhoe finishes at the base of the wall.  It's lake all the way.  O'Sheas Crossing is on the Brisbane River between Somerset and Esk.  Upstream from there is more Brisbane River

The only access to the Stanley arm of Wivenhoe is at Somerset Park. No access via the bridge a few km down. there are no other crossings on tbe stanley arm. Or you can travel up in a boat right to the Somerset Wall, nearest boat ramp is Hamon Cove....

They've been catching a lot of small bass there and some big golden perch in past week.

On top of all this, is it true you can use petrol outboards past a certain point at Wivanhoe ?

The lake stops upstream of Oshea's Crossing, past Barney's Rocks

Thanks for that Sweetwater, I was not thinking about upstream on the Brisbane. Is there any navigable water for a small tinny up that way?

Cheers Andrew

I have also heard that at times fisheries patrol the area below the Somerset wall and have fined people for fishing , wait for it, in a "river" in the closed season.

WTF?

Definitely not in closed waters as part of the 400 meter restriction beow weirs and the like.

You understand wrongly.  That is the Stanley River.

There's definitely navigable water up both arms (Brisbane River & Stanley River) there. You can't run smokey until upstream of Barney's Rocks and there's no launching from a trailer possible at O'Shea's Crossing but you can lift a tinnie over the bollards there ok.
The Stanley / Brisbane Junction is not far downstream of O'Sheas Crossing, you can go down, hang a left & go back up the Stanley arm, paddle or electric only tho..... unless something changes in the upcoming recreation review....  :popcorn)

It's a 7km paddle from O'Sheas down to the Brisbane-Stanley junction. Can be hard work if there is any breeze about.

Cheers,
Dave.
