Title: Reel discussion
Post by: takrat on December 18, 2011, 08:46:26 PM
It is always a source of fascination whenever fisho's get together, electronically or otherwise, to hear the various preferences aired. For instance there's the long running thing regarding baitcasters v's spin gear. I like them both, and years back set about of mastering both as well. However this has ended up in an almost unhealthy pre-occupation with baitcast gear to the point that I would rather catch less fish on a BC than more fish on an egg beater. It's like surface hits, where you might value one good surface hit as being of greater satisfaction that half a dozen sub surface takes. The point of all this is that fisho's are individuals that seldom allow themselves to be pidgeon holed. I reckon that's a good thing personally.

Be it spin or baitcast i am a surface luring FREAK ... i cant get enough of it and lately its just been heddon lures all the way. Just now as you know im pretty obsessed with my new baitcaster but i still take a spin rod for light lures.

I'm the same, only time I drag out the spin reels is when I want to toss lures sub 35mm, usually for bream or whiting fishing on the yak. Love my baitcasters. If I could find someone that made 1-2 kg baitcaster rods (for less than an arm and a leg in price) I'd give the spin gear away altogether.

Baitcast, threadline, fly, side-cast, handline, deep jig, high speed spin, etc. etc.  If it means I can fish, I'll use it.

Yeah. I am much like Aussiebasser. A reel for mme is a tool with which to accomplish the job. I will use whatever suits the job best.

I left out a bit of string on a coke bottle, but I've used that method as well.  When you see what is used to tempt fish in other parts of the world you appreciate how spoilt we are.  PNG Mackeral fishos use a condom on an 8/0 for trolling.  They get the condoms free and don't use them for the intended purpose.

Smith's do one or used to do one. Little short pofter rod like the gladiator job but real light in funky colours.

First saw at Fish Head and have seen at the whore house.

Dale, do you have one?

I only own 1 bait caster combo, but by far it is my favourite outfit to use. Much more accurate with it than the spin! Just need a reel to go with my other cast rod and I will have my first bait cast bass combo :)
Actually there is a question for yall, what bait cast reel would you recommend to run 10lb-12lb braid for the bass?
I enjoy the spin for the plastics though (light stuff)

Spin or casting....if I am using either one it means I am fishing which is a good thing. :)

Dont favor one over another really but when it comes to acuracy between the two thats a tough one.
Really I think that  a lure can be delivered much flatter, faster and further with spin gear than you can with a casting reel. This can be of great advantage with acuracy particularly in tight country.

Adds another dimension to the meaning of soft plastic/rubber.....

On a side note about that. I know the condom king of PNG. Lives out your way too Dale. Just before Fernvale. Roland B. Know him?

Dale the condoms are probably too small any how, but I suppose you could try plaiting three together and use 'em as a shock leader. The main difference between them and us is that they fish to live, we live to fish. Binder, keep an eye open for any Wilson Live Fibre Lightening 1-3kg rods there may be a few around at about $100 or even less. Great little rod, i have one and am not selling. Damiki may be bringing one out next year, it will retail for around $150 I'm told. You could enquire at Tackle World Southport in the meantime. Have to acknowledge that spin gear has its place as has BC but just happen to love the way BC retrieves.

No I don't, although the owners of the Fernvale pub are good mates with Riccard from Baia.  I think they went to school together.

I've got a spare 1-2 kg spin rod sitting in the shed for when I am feeling keen, its going to get stripped and rebuilt as a baitcaster as an experiment.

Got a cronarch 100 waiting to go on it.

Just finished looking at a recent AFC Bass comp where they were hauling 'em in. Matthew Mott is supposed to be pretty good and he was using a baitcaster almost the whole time, with a spinner bait.

I think if you were to ask Matthew Mott how good he was, he'd gladly tell you, but, just because he chooses to use a certain style of reel and a certain brand of lure (Which he plugs quite well) it doesn't mean that you will be as successful as he is.  Peter Brock drove Holdens, so do I, but I'll never be half the driver he was.  The whole thing is to use what you are comfortable with.

Some people can walk the dog and some cant. seen so many people that dont know how to impart action onto lures.

If you want to do something bad enough you will find a way, regardless of who you are. I just happened to notice him making a fair bit of use of a baitcaster. Another bloke uses fly gear. A mate of mine reckons that's an expensive way to catch less fish. Needless to say I have not been bitten by the fly casting thing...yet.

dunno..I saw A UTE going through Everton Park the other day..I thought brock may have been driving it..hehe

I have a 200e5 and just collected a new rod for it...for barra/cod..but now have to wait to get fit enough to go fishing again.

I was in awe of the casting ability of that bloke at the convention last year..and Fitzy is pretty accurate also..just ask Dale who had the family jewels on the line. Those blokes sure are accurate.

Car bills are stopping me from buying braid yet but still flicking around with ice blue on the new patriarch ... i think id have to take time to get used to the spin versions now, Some of the casts ive been making often leave me scratching my head "how the .... did i do that!"

Thought id get away from all the soft platic talk and back to the topic  :P
