Title: Rusty surprise.
Post by: estuary girl on May 23, 2011, 11:09:19 PM
I've been playing on that other type of water of late and the past two weekends have seen me have some memorable experiences getting up close with mother nature.Last weekend had a dolphin swim along beside me when I decided to paddle away from them to find some fish.
But yesterday had me experiencing a very special performance that I will cherish forever.Three of us were out fishing off Wello Pt. chasing squire and around lunchtime I looked out to the east and noticed a wind lane.Heard blowing noises and thought it was just dolphins playing out there.Could see something coming up out of the water but being too far away to really make it out clearly it was hard to say.Kept fishing and making remarks to my friends that the water just didn't look right out there.Calm, oily and I just 'felt' something just wasn't quite right.... ???
Curiosity eventually got the better of me and I headed out for a closer look.As I got closer I soon realised we were spectators to a beautiful mammal frolicking in roughly 24ft of water.
My fishing buddies soon joined me and we sat back at a safe respectable distance just to watch. After a little while we realised we couldn't see it and started scanning the water looking for it when we noticed it had moved towards us.Very close towards us!!We hightailed it as fast as we could collectively paddle/peddle away to keep the required distance but the whale had other ideas and took a liking to a certain yak and followed him!!!Not sure if it was just curiosity or it wanted to get cosy to the yak for some whale lurvin' but we made a bee line out of respect for this beautiful creature.
It eventually turned back out into the deeper part of the channel and slowly made it's way up not before bumping into another couple of kayak fishermen.
Truly a beautiful and humbling experience to have the pleasure of witnessing!!!!! :-* :-*

Your right there Dick!We laughed on and off all afternoon at what had happened.I'd love to know what it was doing in such shallow water and if our sounder signals had caused it to become inquisitive towards us?
Another mystery......... ???

Nice one Toni, with all that gear you've got the Whale probably thought you were eskimos; you know, kayaks and all that. Great experience though. Makes you think about how the eskimo's actually hunted whales out of those things.
