Leaping Murray Cod
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:43:20 PM »
Has any one ever seen a Murray Cod leap from the water after birds ???

I sat for maybe 5 minutes on a creek bank in NSW watching a cod ? I would be about 95% sure it was a cod throw itself almost clear of the water after small birds in an overhanging tree and the fish would have been perhaps 80 cm plus.

The splash alerted me first, then again a huge green fish lept even higher after these small birds fluttering above.
Definitely it was a fish and I couldn't see or imagine a resemblance to any other fish.
Alas it is OFF season so was happy to just sit, watch and enjoy.

I am tempted to say " believe it or not " but I am sure this can't be that unusual could it ??????

Cheers,
Pam

I've certainly see Cod hitting baby cormorants and ducklings on the surface in the upper reaches of Somerset. Mighty splashes, not really leaving the water though.

I believe most if not all cod in there are Mary's though. The old Killer lure with black body and red head is a Cod magnet under the breeding trees this time of year!

The things you see when you haven't got a video camera hey??

I've had a 20 odd pound cod come half of its body length out of the water to take a spinnerbait I was just picking up to cast again. I ended up very wet, possibly needed clean undies & had a very green fish pulling string as it tore off away from the boat.

Seen barra, saratoga, archerfish, sooty grunter & tarpon leap partly out after terrestrials, but rarely full body.

fitz..

Never have I seen cod fully leap from the water ( they are normally obscured by a maelstrom of spray and water akin to a underwater detonation ) I have seen  ducks at different times battle for their lives ( we are probably all familiar with the shot of the swamp hen in the cods gullett )  Watch how nervously the galah's and corrella's cockatoo's and the miriad of other birds that alight on a water level stick to drink morning and night from the western rivers  ::)

A lot of big cod are showing up as  by catch at the moment as high water levels and Springtime combine to make them move and breed and makes  them very very active , a reason why the season for cod fishing is closed but some take the opportunity to target the big breeders , some reckon it doesnt matter and others are prepared to wait for the season to open to target the monsters I suppose it all comes down to your choice , there is honest by catch and there is BY CATCH ! This one hit my inbox yesterday ( They are thighs in the back ground!)
