Title: Somerset Wivenhoe boating permit.
Post by: aussiebasser on May 22, 2013, 06:24:42 PM
Have you ever been educated about restrictions and site specific requirements when purchasing a boating permit for Lakes Somerset or Wivenhoe?

Never,
With NPD a requirement of receiving a boating access permit is that you sign a legally binding agreement that you will abide by all rules pertaining to the site and you are given a copy of the rules.
Cheers

I thought Somerset was totally unrestricted waters? EG, not even got a speed limit.

But no, when I used to get my permits over the phone there was no education, apart from where the stickers had to be displayed.

No such thing as "totally unrestricted waters"  The only thing it doesn't have is the blanket speed limit.  Although the Rangers have been disputing that lately and pulling people over for going too fast.  All other boating regulations are in place and SEQWater enforce their own 6.00pm to 6.00am boating curfew.

From about 2005 to 2011 I fished Somerset regularly. I used to buy a weekly boating permit on a Sunday direct from the Ranger on site at the Spit ramp, and use the same permit the next Saturday.

Never once was educated about anything. Did top 118kph in a mates bass boat tho :) Beat my 30hp lol.

I've locked the voting now.  It looks like 1 person has received education out of the 18 people who voted.  From my Jetski group I received a 10:2 (one asked for info and received it, one recieved info unsolicited, and a floaing keyring and drink bottles) rate. Combined we have 27:3 with 27 people receiving no education, and 3 people being given education.

I recently sent this request to SEQWater:

Hello,

On my last visit to Lake Somerset I purchased a boating permit.  Could you please advise the reason for this permit and where the money raised from these permits is spent.

Regards,

Dale Sinclair

and I received this reply from the Recreation Support Officer.

Good afternoon Dale
The permit itself  is issued as a means to educate lake users about the restrictions and site specific requirements for the lake they intend to use. The statistical data collected aids the strategic recreation planning process.
Monies raised from the sale of permits goes back into the provision and maintenance of recreational and boating facilities.
We are currently entering into a process to review the recreational activity requirements  (including boating permits) at all Seqwater sites  and the outcomes of this review will dictate future requirements.

Regards

This is not reflected in our Poll results.

No rules written in 2 point font on the back of the permits?
